Using 7000B Devices Replace Drivers
November 2005, ver. Application Note
Altera® MAX® 7000B device only product-term device capable supporting GTL+, SSTL-2, SSTL-3 standards used processor interfaces, backplane drivers, SDRAM memory interfaces. Traditionally, discrete translators, buffers, drivers, transceivers used convert GTL+, SSTL-2, SSTL-3 signals LVCMOS LVTTL before transferring these signals programmable logic. example, processor-based designs, driver used translate GTL+ signal LVTTL before signal transferred programmable logic device (PLD). External drivers require extra board space introduce delays high-performance applications. single 7000B device replace multiple drivers eliminating chip-to-chip delays, minimizing board space, reducing total system cost. This application note provides comprehensive listing today's discrete drivers explains Altera 7000B devices replace these drivers.
Commercial Drivers
easily implement logic that built into external drivers using Altera's MAX+PLUS® software, allowing 7000B device replace almost driver device. Generally, these drivers available from vendors such Fairchild Semiconductor, National Semiconductor, Philips Semiconductors, Texas Instruments. Because each vendor different timing specifications each device, should consult vendor's data sheets compare timing parameters with 7000B device. find Altera's timing information 7000B Programmable Logic Device Family Data Sheet www.altera.com. Table lists available GTL+ drivers Table lists SSTL-2 SSTL-3 drivers supporting outputs Class Class standards.

Notes Tables
These devices have edge-rate control. 7000B devices offer adjustable output slew rate that configured low-noise (slow) high-performance (fast) operation. Certain devices have combined register/latch functionality that selected enable pin. most cases, only these capabilities will used each design, either register latch primitives MAX+PLUS software. When both functions required, contact Altera Applications macro-function that uses preset clear logic 7000B device registers.
Replacing Commercial Drivers with 7000B Devices
Each 7000B device only replace certain maximum number drivers. This limitation number pins required driver current drive requirements standards. Tables through list number drivers given type) that replaced 7000B device. When LVTTL LVCMOS output standard, limitations number available pins 7000B device. When output pins driving GTL+ SSTL, current drive requirements limiting factor. Most devices listed bidirectional, Tables through list most restrictive case: GTL+ SSTL driving out. example, line four describes device number 16612, 18-bit TTL/GTL+ universal transceiver. This device requires pins plus several control pins. Because device bidirectional, limiting factor current drive requirements, number pins when GTL+ being driven output pins. this drive limitation, many 7000B devices (the EPM7064B device larger) only replace these drivers. However, EPM7256B EPM7512B devices replace three 16612 driver devices.
