Using Adjustable Voltage Regulator
PICDEM board features adjustable voltage regulator, venerable LM317. board, recognized SO-223 package upper left side. Nearby, there header, J10, resistors, R26. used output voltage LM317. default, 330R, which results output voltage 5.0V. reason adjustable voltage regulator provided that PICDEM Demonstration Board used with wide range microcontrollers. PIC18FXXJ90 family devices tolerates maximum 3.6V, whereas PIC18FXX90, PIC16F91X PIC16F946 tolerate maximum 5.5V. adjustable voltage regulator allows different provided PIC18FJ devices PIC18F PIC16F devices. switching between 3.6V 5.5V parts very convenient. plug-in module boards populated with R101 R102, appropriately, according processor module requirement which mates with daughterboard/emulator header that surrounds module (U1A). PICDEM board intended connect with 3-pin header plug-in module. This allows resistors, R101 R102, plug-in module connected parallel resistors, R26. This automatically adjusted voltage appropriate part soldered onto plug-in module. plug-in module prepopulated with values shown Table A-16: TABLE A-16:

First, good idea look data sheet LM317 understand voltage adjusted. won't duplicate details here. following equation taken from LM317 data sheet: EQUATION A-1: VOUT VREF R2/R1) IADJ IADJ minimized LM317, assumed zero least very small. VREF =1.25V; reference voltage developed LM317 between output adjustment terminal. That gives following equation: EQUATION A-2: VOUT 1.25V(1+R2/R1) R102 (R25* R102)/(R25+R102) R101.= (R26* R101)/(R26+R101) stated previously, 330. that without R102 R101, VOUT 1.25V(1+ 1K/330R) 5.04V.
