Configure Specific Port
Introduction
common problem occurs manufacturing environment when required test serial converter cables installing them ports. When serialized cables plugged testing, system allocates port every cable. system limit ports reached, only continue testing free ports uninstalling then reinstalling. problem occurs because serialized cables appear system unique devices, each device identified serial number serial number used driver when creates port. serial number used create port, then would possible setup environment where every cable installed same port. Therefore, only port would needed test number cables. Here describe configure driver achieve this goal.

Location
idea allocate port using information derived from cable's physical location instead serial number. cables always plugged into same port, then they will appear system same port. FTDIBUS.SYS configured location information configuration parameter LocIds been introduced this purpose. LocIds array device locations tree. LocIds then only devices that plugged into these locations supported driver. LocIds been device plugged into supported locations, will installed port. LocIds been device plugged into some other location, then will installed port.

Implementation
Location used define ports supported FTDIBUS. driver's default behaviour that ports supported, default overridden binary value LocIds FTDIBUS service key. LocIds binary value (REG_BINARY) that interpreted array Location IDs. Location 32-bit unsigned integer (DWORD) that represents location device tree. example, driver creates location string device form a&b&c, Location will 0x00000abc. driver installed with support Location changing FTDIBUS.INF include following fragments: [FtdiBus.NT.AddService] AddReg FtdiBus.NT.AddService.AddReg [FtdiBus.NT.AddService.AddReg] Here, port supported, Location 0x00000023 represents host controller port driver installed support more than Location changing FTDIBUS.INF include following fragment: [FtdiBus.NT.AddService] AddReg FtdiBus.NT.AddService.AddReg [FtdiBus.NT.AddService.AddReg] Here, three ports supported. Location 0x00000021 represents host controller port Location 0x00000032 represents host controller port Location 0x00000011 represents host controller port Note that Location represented LocIds field hexadecimal bytes bytereversed order. Note also that although host controllers indexed from ports from Location calculated adjusting host controller number that indexed from

USBView
Location obtained using utility USBView that available from FTDI. Location specific port, USBView plug device into port that required. From menu select Options LocationIDs. Press refresh display port numbers replaced with Location form LocXY where hexadecimal digits. Location that used LocIds field described previous section.
