Functional description
SSL2101 driver that operates directly from rectified mains. SSL2101 uses on-time mode control frequency control control brightness. BRIGHTNESS PWMLIMIT input used control light output combination with external dimmer. PWMLIMIT input also used Thermal Lumen Management (TLM) precision current control.
Start-up UnderVoltage LockOut (UVLO)
Initially, self-supplying from rectified mains voltage. starts switching soon voltage passes VCC(startup) level. supply taken over auxiliary winding transformer soon high enough supply from line stopped high efficiency operation. Alternatively supplied bleeder resistor connected high voltage. Note however maximum voltage rating some reason auxiliary supply sufficient, high-voltage supply also supply soon voltage drops below VCC(UVLO) level, stops switching will restart from rectified mains voltage, internal current delivered sufficient.
Oscillator
internal oscillator inside provides timing switching converter logic. frequency oscillator external resistors capacitor RC2. external capacitor charged rapidly VRC(max) level and, starting from primary stroke, discharges VRC(min) level. Because discharge exponential, relative sensitivity duty factor regulation voltage duty factor almost equal sensitivity high duty factors. This results more constant gain over duty factor range compared Phase Width Modulated (PWM) systems with linear sawtooth oscillator. Stable operation duty factors easily realized. frequency converter when VBRIGHTNESS high estimated using Equation
equals parallel resistance both oscillator resistors. capacitor connected (pin BRIGHTNESS input controls frequency reduction mode. Figure shows that oscillator switches over from curve with parallel with only. BRIGHTNESS voltage will reduce switching frequency.

Bleeder dimming applications
SSL2101 contains some circuitry intended mains dimmer compatibility. This circuit contains current sinks that called bleeders. strong bleeder used zero-cross reset dimmer triac latching. weak bleeder added maintain hold current through dimmer. strong bleeder switch switched when maximum voltage WBLEED SBLEED below Vth(SBLEED) level typically). weak bleeder switch switched soon voltage ISENSE exceeds Vth(high)(ISENSE) level (-100 typically). weak bleeder switch switched when ISENSE voltage drops below Vth(low)(ISENSE) level (-250 typically). weak bleeder switch also switched when strong bleeder switch switched Figure

Demagnetization
system operates discontinuous conduction mode connected. long secondary stroke ended, oscillator will start primary stroke. During first tsup(xfmr_ring) seconds, demagnetization recognition suppressed. This suppression necessary applications where transformer large leakage inductance output voltages.
Overcurrent protection
cycle-by-cycle peak drain current limit circuit uses external source resistor RSENSE measure current. circuit activated after leading edge blanking time tleb. protection circuit limits source voltage over RSENSE1 resistor Vth(ocp)SOURCE, thus limits primary peak current.
Short-winding protection
short-winding protection circuit also activated after leading edge blanking time. source voltage exceeds short-winding protection threshold voltage Vth(swp)SOURCE, stops switching. Only power-on reset will restart normal operation. short-winding protection also protects case secondary diode short circuit.
Overtemperature protection
Accurate temperature protection provided device. When junction temperature exceeds thermal shut-down temperature, stops switching. During thermal protection, current lowered start-up current. continues normal operation soon overtemperature situation disappeared.
