BOARDFLEX SENSITIVE APPLICATIONS SOLUTION:
predominant failure mode multilayer ceramic chip capacitors cracking caused board flexure. Cracks then create path current pass from electrode through dielectric opposing electrode from terminations MLCC through dielectric opposing electrode. This subsequently result capacitance loss, leakage Insulation Resistance (IR) and/or more seriously, high current shorts. short circuit condition surface mounted capacitors cause further failures downstream components. Vishay's Open Mode Design Capacitors series) reduce risk these destructive conditions through MLCC designs that prevent board flexure cracks reaching opposing electrode. MLCCs reduce risk early field failures associated with board flex cracks. However, important note that even open mode designs presence flexure related cracks cause capacitance loss leading localized stresses parts. eventually, depending application environment, including such factors high voltage pulse frequency thermal cycling this lead internal breakdown component.
POLYMER TERMINATION
Polymer termination provides additional protection against board flexure damage absorbing greater mechanical thermal stresses. Components packaged, transported, stored handled same standard terminated product. Wave reflow soldering MLCC does require modification equipment and/or process. Polymer termination greatly reduces risk mechanical cracking however does completely eliminate.
