DESCRIPTION LM117/LM217/LM317 monolithic integrated circuit TO-220, ISOWATT220, TO-3 D2PAK packages intended positive adjustable voltage regulators. They designed supply more than 1.5A load current with output voltage adjustable over range. nominal output voltage selected means only resistive divider, making device exceptionally easy eliminating stocking many fixed regulators.

APPLICATION INFORMATION LM117/217/317 provides internal reference voltage 1.25V between output adjustments terminals. This used constant current flow across external resistor divider (see fig. giving output voltage VREF IADJ device designed minimize term IADJ (100µA max) maintain very constant with line load changes. Usually, error term IADJ neglected. obtain previous requirement, regulator quiescent current returned output terminal, imposing minimum load current condition. load insufficient, output voltage will rise. Since LM117/217317 floating regulator "sees" only input-to-output differential

voltage, supplies very high voltage with respect ground regulated long maximum input-to-output differential exceeded. Furthermore, programmable regulator easily obtainable and, connecting fixed resistor between adjustment output, device used precision current regulator. order optimise load regulation, current resistor (see fig. should tied close possible regulator, while ground terminal should near ground load provide remote ground sensing.
