APPLICATIONS INFORMATION
UDN2936W-120 power driver provides commutation logic power outputs drive three-phase brushless motors. UDN2936W-120 designed interface with singleended linear digital Hall-effect devices (HEDs). Internal pull-up resistors allow direct with open-collector digital HEDs. inputs have thresholds. commutation logic provides decoding HEDs with 120° electrical separation. step logic sequencing, half-bridge driver sourcing current, driver sinking current, driver high-impedance state (see Truth Table). logic BRAKE turns three sink drivers turns three source drivers, essentially shorting motor windings ground. During braking, back-electromotive force generated motor produces current that dynamically brakes motor. Depending upon rotational velocity motor, this current approach locked rotor current level (which limited only motor winding resistance). During braking, output currentlimiting circuitry disabled care should taken ensure that back-EMF generated brake current does exceed maximum rating peak) sink drivers ground clamp diodes. Changing logic level DIRECTION inverts output states, thus reversing direction motor. Changing direction rotating motor produces back-EMF current similar when braking motor. load current should allowed exceed maximum rating peak) drivers. internally generated dead time (td) approximately prevents potentially destructive crossover currents that occur when changing direction braking. Motor current internally controlled pulse-width modulating source drivers with preset hysteresis format. Load current through external sense resistor (RS) constantly monitored. When current reaches trip point (determined external reference voltage internal default), source driver disabled. Current recirculates through ground clamp diode, motor winding, sink driver. internal constant-current sink reduces trip point (hysteresis). When decaying current reaches this lower threshold, source driver enabled again cycle repeats. Thresholds hysteresis with external resistors, internal defaults used. With VTHS trip point internally with 7.5% hysteresis. Load current then determined equation: ITRIP With VTHS threshold, hysteresis percentage, peak current with external resistors according equations: threshold voltage (VTHS) VREF /(RH hysteresis percentage VREF load trip current TRIP) VTHS Percentage hysteresis fixed value independent load current. chopping frequency function circuit parameters including load inductance, load resistance, supply voltage, hysteresis, switching speed drivers. UDN2936W-120 outputs rated normal operating currents startup currents (see cautions above regarding braking changing motor direction). Internal power ground-clamp flyback diodes protect outputs from voltage transients that occur when switching inductive loads. devices also feature thermal protection circuitry. junction temperature reaches +165°C, thermal shutdown circuitry turns output drivers. outputs re-enabled when junction cools down approximately +140°C. This protection only intended protect device from failures excessive junction temperature loss heat sinking should imply that output short circuits permitted. with high-power integrated circuits, printed wiring board should utilize heavy ground plane. optimum performance, drivers should soldered directly into board. power supply should decoupled with electrolytic capacitor (>10 close possible device supply (VBB Replacing UDN2936W. original UDN2936W easily replaced with UDN2936W-120 inserting inverter (two resistors 2N3904 2N2222) between Hall sensor UDN2936W-120, shown figure next page. extra inverter available, certain that pull-up Hall sensor provided.
