Application Notes
LP8358 linear regulator with power good output designed used with ESR, cost ceramic capacitors. EXTERNAL CAPACITORS LP8358 regulator requires output capacitor maintain stability. capacitor must least greater. capacitor low-ESR ceramic chip capacitor, however improved capacitance over temperature, tantalum capacitors used. input capacitor recommend when supply capacitance more than inches away from device, when supply battery. dielectric ceramic capacitors recommended because their temperature performance. X7R-type capacitor change capacitance over their operating temperature range most stable type ceramic capacitors. dielectric capacitors change value much respectively over their operating temperature range. ceramic chip capacitor with dielectric, value must much higher than X7/R ceramic tantalum capacitor ensure same minimum capacitance value over operating temperature range. Tantalum capacitors have very stable dielectric (10% over their operating temperature range) also used with this device. ENABLE/SHUTDOWN LP8358 active high enable that allows regulator disabled. Applying Logic Level Shutdown will cause output turn off, this state current consumed regulator goes nearly zero. Applying Logic Level high 2.0V) enables output voltage. enable/shutdown must left floating; floating enable cause indeterminate state output. ACTIVE SHUTDOWN LP8358 designed with N-channel MOSFET that acts shutdown clamp. N-channel turns when device disabled allow output capacitor load discharge POWER GOOD power good output open-drain output with extreme RDSON. designed essentially work power-on reset generator once regulated voltage and/
fault condition. When fault condition occurs, output power good goes low. power good output comes back once output reached nominal value delay passed timing diagram. LP8358 internal circuit monitors overcurrent, temperature falling output voltage. these conditions flagged this indicates fault condition. flagged condition output into onchip delay circuit that drives open drain output transistor. TRANSIENT RESPONSE LP8358 implements unique output stage dramatically improve transient response recovery time. output totem-pole configuration with P-channel MOSFET pass device N-channel MOSFET clamp. N-channel clamp significantly smaller device that prevents output voltage from overshooting when heavy load removed. This feature helps speed transient response significantly decreasing transient response recovery time during transition from heavy load light load. THERMAL BEHAVIOR LP8358 regulator internal thermal shutdown protect device from over heating. Under operating conditions, maximum junction temperature LP8358 must below 125°C. Maximum power dissipation calculated based output current voltage drop across part. maximum power dissipation PD(MAX) (TJ(MAX) junction-to-ambient thermal resistance, 235°C/W LP8358 SOT23-5 package. maximum ambient temperature J(MAX) maximum junction temperature die, 125°C. When operating LP8358 room temperature, maximum power dissipation 425mW. actual power dissipated regulator (VIN -VOUT)IL +VIN IGND Substituting PD(MAX), determined above, solving operating condition that critical application will give maximum operating condition regulator circuit. prevent device from entering thermal shutdown, maximum power dissipation cannot exceeded.
