80C32 Module General Description
Maxim 80C32 microcontroller (µC) module intended with this other Maxim evaluation kits kits). contains 80C32 RS-232 interface, 8kbytes EPROM, 32kbytes static RAM, address decoding logic. 40-pin connector mates with connector found Maxim kits designed interface with 80C32 module. module connected IBM-compatible personal computer over serial communications port. 80C32 Module Power Supply
Maxim 80C32 module requires input normal operation. on-board 78M05 power regulator supplies required logic module, requirements attached 40-pin connector. pre-regulated voltage also available data connector. source must capable supplying 100mA module meeting load requirements kit.
Microprocessor Supervisor
MAX707 module monitors logic supply, generates power-on reset, produces reset pulse whenever reset button pressed. watchdog function included because they frequently interfere while debugging programs, debugging prime function this board.
80C32 Microcontroller
80C32 member popular Intel 8051 family µCs. low-power CMOS version that requires external program storage, bytes internal RAM, four 8-bit ports. Three ports required system serial communications memory control. fourth port (P1) available through data connector. 80C32 communicates with over serial RS232 link. MAX233 acts level shifter between ±15V RS-232 signals levels 80C32.
MAX186 Evaluation System/Evaluation
MAX233 also generates output voltages necessary drive RS-232 lines. Port (pins 32-39) 80C32 multiplexes lower eight bits memory address eight bits read/write data. lower eight bits address data latched during each cycle 74HCT573 octal latch. latch controlled address latch enable (ALE) signal 80C32. Port (pins 21-28) 80C32 supplies upper eight bits address information. port pins (10-17) provide several unrelated functions. Pins used receive data (RxD) transmit data (TxD) pins RS-232 link. Pins write (WR) read (RD) control signals data cycles. Four other pins configured interrupt timer controls, used this board.

Memory
board 27C64 EPROM containing code initializing 80C32 downloading additional program code 62256 RAM. After reset, EPROM resident code initializes 80C32, determines address range RAM, sets RS-232 baud rate 1200, waits communications from Receiving character will prompt program send initial banner that includes program name, revision level, boundaries on-board RAM. 62256 CMOS (32kbyte) static used hold program code various Maxim kits that 80C32 module controller. Software Architecture
Software kits using Maxim 80C32 module divided into three elements: interface program running IBM-compatible module program located EPROM, program supplied disk that transferred located module. Immediately following transmission logon banner, program runs checker routine on-board 256kbit static RAM. filled with several patterns then read verify that each pattern been retained. pass fail indication displayed personal computer after each pass. software requires proper operation RAM. attempt board checks fail. other programs kits provided floppy disk shipped with each kit. program acts user interface transmits commands 80C32 module. other 80C32 application program that executes from located module. procedure loading programs varies with each kit, follow instructions provided.
EPROM Resident Program
EPROM resident program initializes 80C32, establishes communications over RS-232 link, verifies static RAM, downloads other programs. operation starts power-up whenever reset button pressed. After reset, program waits indefinitely receive character over RS-232 port. When first character received, logon banner identifying module firmware revision transmitted.
