CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
MC34017 Tone Ringer derives power supply rectifying ringing signal. uses this power activate tone generator drive piezo-ceramic transducer. tone generation circuitry includes relaxation oscillator frequency dividers which produce high frequency tones well tone warble frequency. relaxation oscillator frequency resistor capacitor connected oscillator will operate with from with proper choice external components (see Figure frequency tone ringer output signal alternates between fo/4 fo/5. warble rate which frequency changes fo/320 MC34017-1, fo/640 MC34017-2 fo/160 MC34017-3. With oscillator frequency, MC34017-1 produces 1000 tones with 12.5 warble rate. MC34017-2 generates 1600 2000 tones with similar 12.5 warble frequency from oscillator frequency. MC34017-3 will produce tones with 12.5 warble rate from oscillator frequency. tone ringer output circuit source sink with output voltage swing peak-to-peak. Volume control readily implemented adding variable resistance series with piezo transducer. Input signal detection circuitry activates tone ringer output when line voltage exceeds programmed threshold level. Resistor determines ringing signal amplitude which output signal will generated. ringing signal rectified internal diode bridge. rectified input signal produces voltage across which referenced voltage across resistor filtered capacitor input threshold circuit. When voltage capacitor exceeds threshold comparator enables tone ringer output. Line transients produced pulse dialing telephones charge capacitor sufficiently activate tone ringer output. Capacitors resistor determine signature test impedance. also provides filtering output stage power supply prevent droop square wave output signal. diodes series with rectifying bridge provide necessary non-linearity signature tests. internal shunt voltage regulator between terminals provides voltage power output stage, oscillator frequency dividers. voltage limited approximately regulation. protect from telephone line transients, triggered when regulator current exceeds diverts current from shunt regulator reduces power dissipation within EXTERNAL COMPONENTS
Line Input Resistor affects tone ringer input impedance. also influences ringing threshold voltage limits current from line transients. (Range: Line Input Capacitor couples tone ringer telephone line controls ringer input impedance frequencies. (Range: µF). Oscillator Resistor (Range: Oscillator Capacitor (Range: 3000 pF). Input Current Sense Resistor controls ringing threshold voltage. Increasing decreases ring-start voltage. (Range: Ringing Threshold Filter Capacitor filters voltage across input ringing threshold comparator. also provides dialer transient rejection. (Range: µF). Ringer Supply Capacitor filters supply voltage tone generating circuits. also provides current path Vrms ringer signature impedance. (Range: µF).
