Chapter INTRODUCTION
RS-232 Four Port Smart Switch/Port Combiner, Model 232SS2, allows RS-232 host device connect many four RS-232 devices. switch controlled different ways. first referred smart switch mode. this mode, switch controlled sending programmable preamble code "Master" port 232SS2. other switch controlled referred port combiner mode. port combiner mode, slave port gain access master port asserting handshake line. none slave ports have their handshake line asserted, switch controlled using preamble code. master port configured port internal switch setting. master port configured port, four slave ports will become ports. 232SS2 supports following signals: RTS, CTS, DSR, DCD, DTR. 232SS2 enhanced mode which offers special timer features. timer features used prevent slave devices from receiving preamble commands, inadvertently switching from binary/graphic file transfers, inactive slave devices from holding control master port. 232SS2 will work with baud rates from 1200 115,200 bps; data bits; even, parity; stop bits (7,N,1 allowed). NOTE: data format rates mentioned used switch 232SS2. communication between devices format data rate. There four LED's 232SS2 indicate which port connected master port. master port DB-25S female connector slave ports have DB-25S female connectors. 232SS2 requires 12Vdc 100ma. which provided through 2.5mm power jack.

Smart Switch/Port Combiner Mode
This mode allow Ports select master port using handshake line. also allows selection from master port preamble code described Smart Switch Only Mode section. Position "SW1" must port combiner mode. When handshake line goes high four ports, will establish connection from that port master port. This works firstcome-first-serve basis. multiple ports have their handshake lines high, port that been waiting longest will next connected master port. example, (Initial conditions slave ports with handshake lines asserted.) chronological order, Port asserts handshake line, Port asserts handshake line, Port asserts handshake line then Port disasserts handshake line. When Port asserts handshake line, connection will made between master port Port When Port disasserts handshake line, Port will disconnected Port will connected master port. When Port disasserts handshake, Port will disconnected Port will connected master port. handshake line that used connect master port depends configuration master port (which turn determines configuration slave ports). master port configured port, then slave ports configured DCE, must raised device (which DTE) connect master port. master port configured port, then slave ports configured must raised device (which DCE) connect master port. example, port configured port (slave device DTE), order establish connection master port, device must high (assert). 232SS2 would recognize this prompt connection master port. connection would dropped soon from device lowered. devices ports raise time request connection. However, port connected master port, data sent from devices ports 232SS2 will lost. 232SS2 does have buffering. NOTE: When port selected Master Port, handshake lines will ignored until Master Port sends turn code. When Master Port selected handshake line, preamble codes will ignored.

typical application would have tied together master port. When (assuming slave device) port (configured DCE) asserted, port will asserted when connection established. port connected master port, then that port will remain low. Therefore, port monitor handshake line determine connection been established. Enhanced Mode Timer Features 232SS2 enhanced mode, which offers special timer features. timer features used prevent slave devices from receiving preamble commands, inadvertent switching from binary/graphic file transfers, inactive slave devices from holding control master port. timer different modes: inactivity mode inadvertent switch mode. When inactivity mode, 232SS2 will monitor data lines. there activity specified time, selected slave port will disconnected from master port. When inadvertent switch mode, 232SS2 will ignore switching commands specified period time. After this time expired, selected slave port will disconnected from master port. timer functions enabled dipswitch setting through software commands. Dipswitch position must 232SS2 enhanced mode. software commands follow same format preamble codes used switching. There commands used timer functions: Timer Mode Timer Value. These commands require additional byte data. Timer Value command requires third byte ASCII character. data byte (fourth byte) must value between ASCII ASCII "9". value used disable timer. Refer Table timer values. example, sending following string 232SS2 will timer value seconds (assuming programmable character factory default SetTV$ CHR$(27) CHR$(2) +"T" tells 232SS2 timer value command indicates which timer value use.

Timer Mode command requires third byte ASCII "M". data byte (fourth byte) ASCII "0", zero (default), timer will setup inactivity timer. example: Sending following string 232SS2 will timer inactivity timer (assuming programmable character factory default SetTM$ CHR$(27) CHR$(2) +"M" tells 232SS2 timer mode command indicates timer inactivity timer. When timer configured inactivity timer, 232SS2 will monitor data lines data. there activity specified timer value, slave port that connected master port will disconnected. smart switch mode, inactivity timer used prevent preamble codes from being received slave devices. port combiner mode, inactivity timer used prevent devices from tying master port. example (port combiner mode), slave ports have their handshake lines asserted. device Port handshake line asserted currently connected master port, been transmitting receiving data. When inactivity timer expires, Port will disconnected next slave port will then connected master port (following first-come-first-serve rule). Port will then placed "end line". data byte Timer Mode command ASCII "1", timer will setup ignore switching commands. Sending following string 232SS2 will timer ignore switching commands. After timer expired, slave port that connected master port will disconnected. This feature useful prevent inadvertent switching during binary/graphic type file transfers. example (smart switch mode): timer configured ignore switching commands seconds. select Port command sent 232SS2. Method
This method enables user select Smart Switch port pressing predefined sequence keys same time after SSTSR installed (refer Program Installation). Example: sequence <Lft Shift><Alt><A|B|C|D|N> selected, change ports would press same time: Left Shift select port Left Shift select port Left Shift select port Left Shift select port Left Shift turn ports
Command Line Method
This method enables user select Smart Switch port through command line. specify Smart Switch port through command line, would type SSTSR followed command symbol letter port. Example: change Smart Switch port '"C" would type SSTSR prompt press ENTER key. Before Smart Switch port changed, check made determine port busy transmitting. port busy STSR will generate tone notify that port busy that port change cannot made. CAUTION: software package using transmission running fast baud rate (57600), SSTSR detect Smart Switch port busy transmission could interrupted. SSTSR does detect when Smart Switch port receiving data. Therefore, data being received, Smart Switch port still changed.
