Chapter INTRODUCTION
232BSS4 provides communications four devices from serial port. Each port uses dedicated UART includes byte transmit buffer byte receive buffer (16K bytes total). Each port independently configured data rate, data format, protocol. Master port send receive data from Slave ports while other Slave ports continue buffer data. Master device also broadcast same message more Slave ports once. 232BSS4 configured send data automatically Master port from each Slave ports when data present with optional preamble identifying port. also provide two-way communications between Master port Slave port time. Switching control done through user-defined three four character command strings. control sequences removed from data stream, making switch transparent Slave devices. setup software provided walks user through possible parameters. Switches cascaded expand 232BSS4 more than four ports. units also used back-to-back provide automatic connection between devices over single data channel. LEDs 232BSS4 indicate when unit powered which port selected send data Master port.

Symbols Conventions
Throughout this chapter manual, following symbols conventions will used clarify what type data addressing. Items enclosed {brackets} will denote byte. character "quotes" will normally denote printable ASCII character. byte described CAPS ASCII description non-printable character. abbreviation will denote decimal value. lower case letter will used show value. Items italics optional items only used certain configurations. instances when these items required will explained text.
Indicators
232BSS4 five indicators. first, labeled "+12 POWER" indicates that power applied switch. other four, labeled "PORT "PORT indicate which Slave port currently selected transmit Master. Smart Switch Only mode, port LEDs indicate which port selected through Select Port command. Auto Select mode, port LEDs indicate which port currently sending Master. indication provided display which Slave port currently receiving from Master.

Port Configurations
232BSS4 provides dedicated UART five ports. This allows port individually configured baud rate, number data bits, parity, hardware (RTS/CTS) handshaking. Configuration ports done through setup software. Baud Rate: Each port configurable following baud rates: 1200 2400 4800 9600 19.2K 38.4K 57.6K 115.2 kbps Data Bits: Each port configured Seven Eight data bits. Note: Master Slaves differently, port Seven data bits cannot transmit eighth bit. Parity: Each port configured Even, Odd, parity. Because Master port uses slightly different UART, capable receiving only seven bits, thus seven data bits with parity allowed Master port. other configurations possible. Stop bits: Each port uses stop bit. This value currently fixed changed setup software. Hardware(RTS/CTS) Handshaking: Each port configured hold data until input handshake line goes high. Master port, four (RTS) would have held high host device order 232BSS4 send data. Slaves, eight (CTS) needs held high Slave device 232BSS4 send data. connected devices prevent data from being sent from 232BSS4 holding their corresponding handshake lines low.

Smart Switch Only Mode
Description: Smart Switch Only mode used when host device connected Master port initiates communications with Slave devices. 232BSS4 Smart Switch Only, Auto Select left unchecked setup software. Smart Switch Only mode, 232BSS4 constantly looking command sequence monitoring data that being received Master port from host device. This command tell 232BSS4 connect Master port single Slave port, send data more Slave ports once, discontinue communications with Slave ports, ignore commands specific length time. command characters buffered until full command sequence received. 232BSS4 recognizes data stream command sequence, sequence passed through switch. Options: Initial Connections: Upon power-up, 232BSS4 initialized allow Master access Slave ports without commands sent. Master Slave Slave Master initialization each independently configurable through setup software. Master also broadcast Slave ports power-up. ports selected initialized power-up, 232BSS4 will wait switching command before allowing Master access Slaves. Character Command: 232BSS4 commands either three four characters long. first three characters programmed value through setup software. third fourth character actual command. Thus command sequence would look like: {Char1}{Char2}{Char3}{Command Character} Char1-3 would defined user through setup software. Char3 would only sent 232BSS4 four character command.

Binary file transfer: methods provided 232BSS4 prevent inadvertent switching during transfer data bytes from Master device more Slaves. Because user doesn't know command sequence imbedded data, switch must ignore commands. Note that these procedures needed binary file will transferred from Slave devices Master device. switching commands used 232BSS4 with data from this direction, inadvertent switching occur. Method1 Ignore Commands Specific Length Time first method ignore commands specific length time. This method useful user knows long transfer will take. Master would first send command connect Slave port(s) that receive data. Then Master device would send command along with

Method2 Ignore Commands Using second method ignoring command sequences 232BSS4 ignore commands from Master device. This option enabled through setup software. This method useful length binary file transfers known. user would first raise Master device, then send command connect Slave port(s) that receive data. Once command sent, Master device would then lower transmit data. 232BSS4 would ignore command sequences pass them through connected ports until raised. When Auto Select mode enabled through setup software, 232BSS4 passes data automatically from Slaves Master. Each Slave port buffered until Master available, then sent turn. time, Master reply Slaves using Send Specific Ports command, override automatic switching selecting specific port both transmit receive. When Master device releases Slave through Turn ports command, automatic switching resumes. 232BSS4 will revert back Slave port that sending data before Master took over next sequential Slave port with data buffer. full description 232BSS4 commands, refer previous section, "Smart Switch Only Mode." Options Initial Connections: Upon power-up, 232BSS4 initialized allow Master send data Slave ports without commands sent. Master also broadcast Slave ports power-up. This allows switch used devices existing port without software programming. port initialization configured through setup software. Timeouts: When multiple Slave devices sending data Master port same time, 232BSS4 must determine when stop sending from Slave port switch next. parameters required entered setup software Auto Select mode. Port Time Inactivity Time tell 232BSS4 much time spend each port, long port must inactive before switching next port. Port Time: Setting Port Time value other than zero configures Master device receive data from single port only length time specified during setup. Times milliseconds anywhere range 65,000 seconds). value zero Port Time would give transmitting Slave port access Master until Inactivity Timeout reached until specific Turn command sent from Master device.

When specified Port Time elapsed, 232BSS4 checks sequence other Slave ports with buffered data switches them. other Slave ports need access Master, current Slave port will again connected until another Port Time elapsed. Inactivity Time: Inactivity Timer tracks long Slave port been idle. Inactivity Time reset time data received connected Slave port sent Master Port. This way, Master port slower than connected Slave port, Slave port considered inactive while waiting Master catch Inactivity Time through setup software. Times milliseconds anywhere range 65,000 seconds). value zero Inactivity Time would give transmitting Slave port access Master until Port Timeout reached until specific Turn command sent from Master device. Port Inactivity Time Setup Tips: Normally, Inactivity Time should lower than Port Time. Setting zero either value allows other have full control port switching. Setting value zero both timeouts keeps Slave port connected until explicitly turned Master device through Turn ports command. Slave Preamble: Each Slave programmed transmit preamble Master device when Slave becomes connected.
