Description: LM317 Current Source Operation ICS1702EB/CR
LM317 op-amp 1.25V reference inside op-amp controls base power transistor inside LM317. op-amp turns transistor enough maintain 1.25V between LM317 "OUT" "ADJ" pin. schematic ICS1702EB shows potentiometer (R16), adjusting output current. wiper adjusted fully toward R14, equally divide voltage drop across R15. Please note that sense resistor which only carries LM317 quiescent current (typically 50uA). change output current, voltage drop across should 2.5V with maximum current want flowing through R15. This determines value example 2.5V/2 1.25A. When wiper adjusted fully toward R14, maximum desired output current will flow 2.5V will across R15. When wiper adjusted fully away from R14, output current reduced about half maximum current voltage drop across will about 1.25V. above example 1.25V/2 .625A. Please note that when wiper adjusted fully away from R14, "ADJ" connects side through since serves sense resistor, other side LM317 "OUT" pin. This 1.25V developed across when wiper adjusted fully away from R14.
