Installing MasterBlaster Serial/USB Communications Cable
Introduction
MasterBlasterserial/USB communications cable download cable that allows workstation users program configure devices in-system. MasterBlaster cable provides multidevice JTAG chain configuration programming support SRAM-based devices, such APEX20K Mercurydevices, EEPROM-based devices, such MAX® 3000 7000 devices, configuration devices, such EPC2 EPC16. also MasterBlaster cable SignalTap® logic analysis. MasterBlaster cable also provides multidevice Passive Serial chain configuration support SRAM-based devices, such APEX Mercury devices. This cable used 2.5-, 3.3-, 5.0-V systems. MasterBlaster communications cable connects circuit board (Windows 2000 Windows only) RS-232 serial port (called port UNIX, Linux workstation. 10-pin female plug cable connects 10-pin male header circuit board that contains target device(s), shown Figure 1-1. Programming configuration data downloaded from serial port, using Quartus® Programmer, through MasterBlaster cable circuit board through these connections. MasterBlaster communications cable receives power from following sources:

MasterBlaster cable connects computer through serial port, connects circuit board through standard 10-pin female connector.

install MasterBlaster cable device configuration programming Windows follow these steps: Connect standard RS-232 cable standard cable, MasterBlaster cable connect other appropriate port computer.

using MasterBlaster communications cable with port, Windows 2000 Windows operating system prompts locate MasterBlaster driver mblaster.inf file. MasterBlaster driver located your \<Quartus system directory>\drivers directory.
Connect 16-pin female header cable 16-pin male MasterBlaster port, 10-pin female cable 10-pin male header target printed circuit board. Figure shows MasterBlaster serial/USB communications cable.

install MasterBlaster cable device configuration programming Linux UNIX Workstation, follow these steps: With standard RS-232 cable, connect cable MasterBlaster cable, connect other cable appropriate port computer. Connect 16-pin female header cable 16-pin male MasterBlaster port, 10-pin female cable 10-pin male header target printed circuit board, shown Figure 1-1. Open Quartus Programmer: Choose Programmer (Tools menu). Choose (File menu). Click Other Files tab, select Chain Description File, click Programmer window, click Hardware Setup. Hardware Settings Hardware Setup dialog displayed. Click Hardware. Hardware dialog displayed. Hardware type list, select MasterBlaster. Port box, select name appropriate serial port. Also, make sure have read write permission serial port. Baud rate list, select baud rate that appropriate your computer. Click
Hardware Setup dialog box, click Close.
Selecting MasterBlaster Cable SignalTap Logic Analyzer
select MasterBlaster communications cable SignalTap Logic Analyzer, follow these steps. Choose SignalTap Logic Analyzer (Tools menu). SignalTap window will open.

Functional Description
MasterBlasterserial/USB communications cable (ordering code: PL-MASTERBLASTER) standard serial port hardware interface (see Figure 2-1). This cable downloads configuration data Stratix Stratix, Stratix Cyclone Cyclone, Mercury, APEX APEX (including APEX 20K, APEX 20KE, APEX 20KC), FLEX (including FLEX 10KA FLEX 10KE), FLEX 8000, FLEX 6000 devices, well programming data 9000, 7000S, 7000A (including 7000AE) devices. Because design changes downloaded directly device, prototyping easy multiple design iterations accomplished quick succession. MasterBlaster cable also supports in-circuit debugging with SignalTap embedded logic analyzer Stratix, APEX APEX devices.

Download Modes
MasterBlaster cable provides download modes:
Passive serial mode (PS)-In this mode Quartus Programmer configure Altera devices supported Quartus software except 3000 7000 devices. JTAG mode-Industry-standard IEEE Std. 1149.1 Joint Test Action Group (JTAG) interface programming JTAG-capable devices. JTAG mode, Quartus Programmer program configure Altera devices supported Quartus software, except FLEX 6000 devices. FLEX 6000 devices JTAG chain, they must bypassed; they cannot configured. Quartus Programmer also program EPC2, EPC4, EPC8, EPC16 configuration devices this mode. JTAG chain contain number combination Altera nonAltera devices that comply with this IEEE 1149.1 specification.
SignalTap Logic Analysis
SignalTap logic analysis enables captured device data specified trigger points stores data APEX APEX embedded system blocks (ESBs). This data then sent JTAG IEEE Std. 1149.1 port APEX APEX device, uploaded through MasterBlaster communications cable, displayed Quartus Waveform Editor.

MasterBlaster Connections

When 5.0- 3.3-V power available circuit board, MasterBlaster cable powered either power cable. MasterBlaster cable's output drivers, connect circuit board's ground MasterBlaster cable's VCC, VIO, pins.
Circuit Board Header Connection
