Functional Description
AL211 contains physical layer interface (PHY) device IEEE 802.3 100Base-TX 100Base-FX networks. contains necessary functions such elastic store driver circuits complete media converter design. device converts MLT3 scrambled symbols from twisted pair (TP) input port into 4B5B NRZI encoded data transmits over fiber media. 4B5B NRZI encoded data from fiber-input port converted scrambled MLT3 symbol stream transmission. AL211 does encode decode 4B5B symbols, therefore errors signaling preserved propagated. addition, benefit "straight-through" conversion that latency 8-bit time (BT). device also supports Far-End Fault Detection (fiber only) Link Status Propagation. port link-fail state, device will cease transmit data disables appropriate output port. essence, device transparent regard connecting links. AL211 provides PECL interface interfacing either equalizer chip fiber module. elastic store provided media converter retime received signal. elastic store disabled reduce latency converter. 100Base-TX 100Base-FX Conversion
AL211's 100Base-TX receiver designed data reception maximum meters Category Cable. applications that require full IEEE 802.3 distance (100 meters), AL211 provides PECL interface interface external equalizer chip. However, media converter applications typically within wiring closet. distance meters adequate support these applications. After scrambled MLT3 signal from twisted pair port received AL211, device descrambles signal converts into signal stream. signal then passed through elastic store retiming. resulting signal then converted into serial NRZI stream sent driver. elastic store disabled reduce latency converter. During idle, AL211 will transmit IDLE signal. twisted pair port link-down state, AL211 will cease transmit signal link fault thus propagated.
100Base-FX 100Base-TX Conversion
AL211 100Base-FX receiver comprised scrambler quantizer. After receiving serial stream from amplifier, device passes signal through elastic store retiming converts NRZI coded data into scrambled MLT3 signal sends 100Base-TX transmitter. During idle, AL211 will transmit scrambled IDLE signal. fiber receiver does receive idle signal, fiber port will into link-down state AL211 will perform tasks: Cease transmit signal port transmit port high impedance; Simultaneously start transmitting far-end fault signals. event remote fault (the receiver receives far-end fault signal), receiver will into link-down state. provides remote fault signal status indication. far-end fault signal indicated far-end fault IDLE signal "ones" follow "zero"). When fiber port link-down state (either remote fault receive link-fail), device will output port into high impedance assert Redun# signal.
Secondary Channel
AL211 provides secondary serial communication channel. This serial port intended point point communication link piggybacked Mbit/s data stream over fiber. data input retrieved from AL211's media conversion device serial port. secondary channel data transmitted during normal transmission stream. During idle IPG), AL211 will insert 10-bit code word 8-bit data into transmit data stream. When regular data transmission progress, secondary channel will remain idle. data written into AL211 will stored on-chip FIFO. additional data written into AL211 before stored data been sent, will write over previous data. Figure illustrates secondary channel data format.

Full Duplex Application
ideal function media converter chip provide full duplex transparent media link. However, because 100Base-FX does support auto-negotiation, AL211 propagate duplex information twisted pair media. Although AL211 does support full autonegotiation, provides option force link partner into full duplex mode with autonegotiated link pulses. When (ENFLP) pulled high, AL211 will transmit autonegotiation with Mbit/s full duplex capability field forcing linked unmanaged switch into full duplex.
PECL Interface
AL211 provides PECL interface interface fiber connect interface. intention interfaces allow design engineers able choose other media interconnects such 1300nm fiber module external twisted pair equalizer. AL211 signal detect function built does require interface signal detect input.
Elastic Store
AL211 provides on-chip elastic store. With elastic store place, device retimes received signal removes jitter. elastic store turned reduce latency device using appropriate pins. typical applications such media conversion 100Base-FX hub, where twisted pair length less than meters fiber length less than meters (reference IEEE 802.3 clause fiber length system configuration), retiming needed. full duplex application fiber length over 2km, elastic store should used remove jitter from signal.

Fault Propagation
AL211 will propagate idle signals from media media. After reception idle signal (all "1s"), device will then transmit idle signal opposite ports, i.e. fiber fiber There types link-failure; receive remote fault (also known far-end fault). receive link-failure. event receive link-failure, AL211 will cease transmit idle signal fiber optic driver. valid link signal either 10Base-T link pulse 100Base-TX idle signal. Fiber receive link-failure. event fiber receive link-failure, AL211 will cease transmit idle signal driver driver into high impedance. device will also send remote fault signal fiber optic driver addition asserting Redun# signal. transmit link-failure. event transmit link-failure, far-end transceiver will cease transmit idle signal start transmitting AL211. Since AL211 does understand FLP, will continue transmit idle signal fiber optic driver. Fiber transmit link-failure. event fiber transmit link-failure, far-end transceiver (with remote fault signaling capability) will transmit signal AL211. result, AL211 will perform tasks: cease transmit idle signal driver driver into high impedance asserting Redun# signal.
Redundant Link
AL211 supports redundant link through DATAoff Redun# signals. redundant link function only available port. implementation redundant link shown Figure 1-6. redundant link also configured with fiber switch ports (far-end fault signaling support required) AL211's. There likely scenarios; either transmit link fault receive link fault could trigger redundant link.

2.9.1 Receive Link Fault event receive link-failure, receiver will into link-down mode. AL211 will take following actions: Start transmitting remote fault signal; TPO+ TPO- pins high impedance; Assert Redun# signal. far-end primary transceiver normally link-up state back-up transceiver link-fail state. During receive link-failure, local AL211 will enable data transmission backup transceiver asserting Redun# signal. backup AL211 will then start sending copies transmit signal. primary far-end receiver that receives signal will enter link-fail state. back-up transceiver will exit link-fail state upon receiving signal from local AL211 re-establishing link. When primary link repaired, Redun# will de-asserted secondary link will turned re-establishing primary link. During normal operation, backup channel will transmitting idle signals data. Therefore, link integrity status back-up channel available through indicator.

2.9.2 Transmit Link Fault 100Base-FX specification provides detect transmit link-failure. Whenever fiber receiver experiences receive link-failure, will transmit far-end fault signal. far-end fault signal indicated far-end fault IDLE signal "ones" follow "zero"). When AL211 receives far-end fault signal, notified far-end station that transmit fault occurred. device will into link-down state will take following actions: TPO+ TPO- pins high impedance; Assert Redun# signal. data transmission will assumed backup AL211 start sending copies signal. Upon re-establishment primary fiber, Redun# will de-asserted backup data link will turned off. 2.9.3 Redundant Link with Switches Repeater Figure shows redundant link implemented pair AL211's fiber switch/repeater. this configuration that transceivers fiber switch must support far-end fault signaling (although IEEE far-end fault signaling option). operation this link configuration very similar AL211 redundant link described above. Instead far-end transceivers being switched, ports switched. Whenever, far-end transceiver receives far-end fault signal IDLE signal, will enter link-fail state. Thus, redundancy accomplished. There limit number redundant links AL211. Also Redun# Data_off signals cascaded many times needs offer more redundant links. minor disadvantage this scenario with switch, that link will functional (spanning tree will port) until addresses stored switch aged out. However, many switches today automatically delete address when there change address. With that feature, link will immediately established.
