and 400 Mb / sec. Three independent 512-byte FIFOs are used for temporary storage: one for isochronous writes, one for asynchronous writes, and another for all read packets. Additional features of the chip include an EPROM interface to provide boot support for peripherals such as disk drives and OpenBoot support for nonx86 platforms. A Silicon Serial Number (SSN) interface provides a 64-bit node-unique ID for Macintosh environments. There is also a SEEPROM interface that can be used to store topology and speed maps of the 1394 bus. This interface is also used to store the subsystem vendor ID. Complete software solution The FireEngine Link chip comes with fully-functional software drivers and applications to simplify development and shorten time to market. Adaptec has written a complete, open-architecture FireSoft API with extensive application support for the Windows environment. This development environment provides a transition path to the Win32 Driver Model (WDM), enabling support for Windows 95 and Windows NT. This allows developers to create products and applications today, while providing an upgrade path to WDM when it becomes available. Software support is also provided for the Mac OS. For digital video applications in both Windows and Macintosh environments, Adaptec has developed the DVSoft software CODEC, enabling video editing applications to work with video in the DV format.

Functionality The FireEngine Link chip is designed to support both data transmission methods defined in the IEEE-1394 specification. Multimedia applications that require guaranteed bandwidth, such as digital video, are supported using isochronous data transfers. Other 1394 aplications are supported using asynchronous transfers. The FireEngine Link chip connects to the PCI bus using standard PCIspecified transceivers. It operates as a bus master during DMA operations and as a slave when its internal registers are being accessed or modified. DMA transfers are performed using six independent DMA channels. Two channels are dedicated for isochronous reads and two for isochronous writes. Separate channels are also used for asynchronous reads and writes. The complete range of 1394 bus speeds are supported, permitting data transfers at 100 Mb / sec, 200 Mb / sec,
