DESCRIPTION
UCC3952 monolithic BiCMOS lithium-ion battery protection circuit that designed enhance useful operating life cell rechargeable battery pack. Cell protection features consist internally trimmed charge discharge voltage limits, discharge current limit with delayed shutdown ultra current sleep mode state when cell discharged. Additional features include chip MOSFET reduced external component count charge pump reduced power losses while charging discharging cell voltage battery pack. This protection circuit requires external capacitor able operate safely shutdown presence short circuit condition.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Fig. shows detailed block diagram UCC3952. Battery Voltage Monitoring battery cell voltage sampled every connecting resistor divider across comparing resulting voltage precision internal reference voltage. Under normal conditions (cell voltage below Over Voltage threshold above Under Voltage threshold), UCC3952 consumes less than 10µA current internal MOSFET fully turned with charge pump. When cell voltage falls below Under Voltage threshold consecutive samples, discon4 nects load from battery pack enters super power mode. pack will remain this state until detects application charger, which point charging enabled. requirement consecutive readings below threshold filters momentary drops cell voltage load transients, preventing nuisance trips. cell voltage exceeds Over Voltage threshold 1sec, charging disabled, however discharge current still allowed. This feature explained further section Controlled Charge/Discharge Mode.

Over Current Monitoring Protection Discharge current continuously monitored internal sense resistor. event excessive current, Over Current condition declared high current (over persists over 1ms. This delay allows charging system bypass capacitors without tripping overcurrent. 0.1µF capacitor CBPS provides momentary holdup assure proper operation event that hard short suddenly pulls cell voltage below minimum operating voltage. Once Over Current condition been declared, internal MOSFET turns off. only return pack normal operation remove load unplugging pack from system. overcurrent reset when internal pull down brings PACK(-) within 50mV BNEG. this point, pack returns normal state operation. Controlled Charge/Discharge Mode When chip senses over-voltage condition, prevents additional charging, allows discharge. This accomplished activating linear control loop which controls gate MOSFET based differential voltage across drain source terminals. linear loop attempts regulate differential voltage across MOSFET 100mV. When light load applied part, loop adjusts impedance MOSFET maintain 100mV across load increases, impedance MOSFET decreased maintain 100mV control. heavy loads (still below "over-current" limit level), loop will maintain regulation will drive gate MOSFET battery voltage (not charge-pump output voltage). MOSFET RDS(on) over-voltage state will higher than RDS(on) during normal operation. voltage drop (and associated power loss) across internal MOSFET this mode operation still significantly lower than typical solution external back-to-back MOSFETs, where body diode conducting. When chip senses under-voltage condition, disconnects load from battery pack shuts itself down minimize current drain from battery. Several circuits remain powered will detect placement battery pack into charger. Once charger presence detected, linear loop activated chip allows charging current into battery. This linear control mode operation effect until battery voltage reaches level VUVR, which time normal operation resumed.
