GENERAL DESCRIPTION
AMS1082 series adjustable fixed voltage regulators designed provide output current operate down input-to-output differential. dropout voltage device guaranteed maximum 1.5V maximum output current, decreasing lower load currents. On-chip trimming adjusts reference voltage Current limit also trimmed, minimizing stress under overload conditions both regulator power source circuitry. AMS1082 devices compatible with older three-terminal regulators offered lead TO-220 package lead TO-263 (Plastic DD).

APPLICATION HINTS
AMS1082 series adjustable fixed regulators easy have protection features expected high performance voltage regulators: short circuit protection thermal shut-down. compatible with older three terminal adjustable regulators, these devices offer advantage lower dropout voltage, more precise reference tolerance improved reference stability with temperature. Stability circuit design used AMS1082 series requires output capacitor part device frequency compensation. addition 150µF aluminum electrolytic 22µF solid tantalum output will ensure stability operating conditions. When adjustment terminal bypassed with capacitor improve ripple rejection, requirement output capacitor increases. value 22µF tantalum 150µF aluminum covers cases bypassing adjustment terminal. Without bypassing adjustment terminal smaller capacitors used with equally good results. ensure good transient response with heavy load current changes capacitor values order 100µF used output many regulators. further improve stability transient response these devices larger values output capacitor used. Protection Diodes Unlike older regulators, AMS1082 family does need protection diodes between adjustment output from output input prevent over-stressing die. Internal resistors limiting internal current paths AMS1082 adjustment pin, therefore even with capacitors adjustment protection diode needed ensure device safety under short-circuit conditions. Diodes between input output usually needed. Overload Recovery When power first turned input voltage rises, output follows input, permitting regulator start into heavy loads. During start-up, input voltage rising, input-to-output voltage differential remains small, allowing regulator supply large output currents. problem occur with heavy output load when input voltage high output voltage low, when removal output short will permit output voltage recover. load line such load intersect points output current curve. this case, there stable output operating points regulator. With this double intersection, power supply need cycled down zero brought again make output recover. Ripple Rejection ripple rejection values measured with adjustment bypassed. impedance adjust capacitor ripple frequency should less than value (normally to120) proper bypassing ripple rejection approaching values shown. size required adjust capacitor function input ripple frequency. APPLICATION HINTS
This current normally specified minimum load current 10mA. Because IADJ very small constant represents small error usually ignored. Connected shown, multiplied divider ratio. Using 16-gauge wire parasitic line resistance about 0.004 foot, translating 4mV/ft load current. important keep positive lead between regulator load short possible large wire board traces. Thermal Considerations AMS1082 series have internal power thermal limiting circuitry designed protect device under overload conditions. However maximum junction temperature ratings should exceeded under continuous normal load conditions. Careful consideration must given sources thermal resistance from junction ambient, including: junction-to-case, case-to-heat sink interface heat sink resistance itself. ensure safe operating temperatures reflect more accurately device temperature, thermal resistance specifications have been developed. Unlike older regulators with single junction-to-case thermal resistance specification, data section these regulators provides separate thermal resistance maximum junction temperature both Control Section Power Transistor. Calculations both temperatures under certain conditions ambient temperature heat sink resistance ensure that both thermal limits met. Junction-to-case thermal resistance specified from junction bottom case directly below die.
