DATA GUIDE "SPLATCH" PLANAR ANTENNAS
"Splatch" breakthrough compact antenna technology. combines excellent performance cost-effectiveness into antenna package that integrated, even designers lacking test equipment. Despite simplicity ease "Splatch" should thought "just other part". correct function critical performance your overall device. Dropping "Splatch" center your board like popcorn will likely yield dismal results. critical follow guidelines below order obtain proper function.

ATTACHMENT
antenna pads designed support both hand automated placement. Castellations have been provided ease solder introduction during hand assembly. parts also fully compatible with reflow process automated assembly.
FEED CONSIDERATIONS
Like most reduced-size antennas "Splatch" fairly high thus exhibits narrow bandwidth characteristics. single most critical element insuring optimum function "Splatch" minimize length feed trace (Transmission Line) "Splatch" itself. feed trace should less than .25" cases microstripped. term "Microstrip" refers trace passed over groundplane width appropriate create 50-ohm transmission line between module antenna. Since antenna does present true stable 50-ohm match, feed trace tends lower antenna's resonant frequency. Given antenna's narrow bandwidth, easily detuned length feed trace; thus, trace should kept short possible. Additional microstrip details available reference section this guide
APPLICATION CONSIDERATIONS
When implemented correctly "Splatch" will yield outstanding repeatable results. However, "Splatch" designed with very specific feed mounting requirements. Failure designer respect these requirements will result unsatisfactory performance. antenna tuned direct mounting product's PCB. Mounting antenna other manner will produce poor results. antenna should with trace <=.25". Longer runs coax feeds recommended. Nothing should placed under directly beside antenna element. Generally, mounting antenna front product illustrated will yield best results.
LAYOUT CONSIDERATIONS
Improper placement planes, traces components will result antenna nulls complete detuning. First, area under antenna board layers should completely free components, traces, groundplane. addition, components traces should pass within .25" top, sides, front back antenna. Ideally antenna will mounted board given unobstructed field view directions. Components placed area below back edge antenna will have little effect since antenna null back edge when referenced appropriately groundplane. Components placed sides antenna items such displays mounted proximity antenna will produce nulls and, possibly, detuning. antenna referenced groundplanes different surface areas; however, been optimized 1.5"x plane area. best performance lowest VSWR will obtained when referenced plane similar area. recommended layout illustrated below. layer board generally antenna mounting pads feed trace. ground pads connected groundplane layer through vias. care sizing placement vias prevent solder migration from attachment pads during attachment.
