Expanding search
search returns documents documents all, make sure searching appropriate indexes. Also, make sure that settings left over from previous search aren't limiting current one. Then these query techniques:
Wild-card characters search text increase
number matches text.
Boolean operator between words
returns documents containing either word.
Word Stemming option finds words that
share stem with search word.
Sounds Like option finds different spellings

Thesaurus option finds words that have
meanings similar meaning search word. details, Defining search queries.
Limiting search
search returns many documents provides many matches individual documents, these query techniques:
Refining search confines documents returned
previous search, which small documents actually indexed.
Boolean operator before word excludes
documents containing word.
Boolean operator between words returns
only documents containing both words.
Proximity option limits searches that
words must close each other-within three pages fewer.

Defining search queries
search word, number, term, phrase made several terms. also other techniques listed below define search query.
Searching term phrase Searching with wild-card characters Refining search Searching with Document Info fields Searching with document creation modification dates Using search options (Word Stemming, Sounds Like, Thesaurus, Match Case, Proximity) Searching with Boolean expressions (AND, NOT)
Searching term phrase
find matches single term, type term text labeled Find Results Containing Text click Search. term word, word with wild-card characters, combination letters, numbers, symbols. find matches phrase, type phrase click Search.
phrase includes word and, used ordinary sense (not Boolean operator),
phrase quotes. search phrase
"once twice"
finds occurrences phrase once twice, occurrences once occurrences twice would without quotes.
phrase includes punctuation (other than
apostrophe) special characters such they ignored. example, either terms
son-in-law,
finds occurrences both son-in-law
law. When word such excluded from
index, cannot search word phrase that includes author index give list such stopwords tell whether numbers have been excluded. more information about phrases quotes, ignored characters, stopwords, excluded numbers, Working around stopwords other exclusions.
Working around stopwords other exclusions
unsuccessful searching phrase that includes common word such that, stopword. unsuccessful search phrase includes number, numbers also have been excluded from index. unsuccessful searching alphanumeric term that includes separator character such symbol mark punctuation, probably because numbers also have been excluded. Acrobat Catalog regularly excludes separator characters from indexes, process sometimes reduces alphanumeric terms such phone numbers numbers.
these cases, following:
constructing search phrase that doesn't include
number, alphanumeric term, possible stopword.
can, information about exclusions from
publisher index. stopword list from publisher. details, following:
Acrobat Catalog treats separator characters Acrobat Catalog excludes numbers
Acrobat Catalog treats separator characters
Separator characters include symbols, space character, most punctuation characters: periods, commas, colons, semicolons, exclamation points, question marks, parentheses, quotation marks, apostrophes. When indexing document, Acrobat Catalog uses separator characters recognize where term ends next term starts. example, sentence
have nothing fear fear itself.
Catalog program uses space characters period identify seven terms: have, nothing, fear, but, itself. program then discards separator characters. space period don't appear index.
Unless discarded separator characters appear alphanumeric term, they have effect searches, because these characters also removed from search terms Acrobat Search. details, Acrobat Search treats separator characters.
Acrobat Search treats separator characters
Separator characters automatically removed from search terms enter well from indexes created Acrobat Catalog, using these characters searches usually produces effect. example, phone number
(415)555-1212
document become three-number phrase index:
1212
searching phone number (415)555-1212 finds phrase 1212 unless numbers excluded from index, because parentheses hyphen disregarded purposes search.
Acrobat Catalog excludes numbers
Index publishers exclude numbers from Acrobat Catalog indexes. Acrobat Catalog defines number sequence more numeric digits through that
Optionally preceded minus sign [-]. Optionally separated more commas
periods [.].
Optionally containing decimal point, which
period comma [,]. Here some examples kinds numbers that Acrobat Catalog exclude from index:
23.54671 44.223.835,5
-37.1
3,012,222
Note that alphanumeric terms made numbers separator characters such also excluded, because Catalog program removes separator characters before determining whether remaining characters constitute number. example,
($3,000.23)
becomes 3,000.23, which excluded number.
Searching with wild-card characters
wild-card characters find words that contain word fragment terms that match arbitrary character pattern:
asterisk, matches zero, one, more characters question mark, matches character
wild-card characters term that part Boolean expression. also wild cards specify Document Info field values. cannot wild cards represent separator characters such hyphen slash [/].
Wild-card examples
geo* *nym ?ight 555-???? matches geodesic, Geoffrey, geothermal matches antonym, homonym, synonym matches fight sight bright matches seven-digit phone numbers with prefix matches premature, prim, primate
pr?m*
