PRODUCT OVERVIEW GENERAL SETUP
PowerCal calibration board comprehensive hardware platform that supports configuration, verification, calibration production test Microchip PowerSmart Smart Battery systems. operates under control Microchip's PowerTool Development/Test software interfaced Windows PowerCal board facilitates serial communication between SMBus interface smart batteries, providing direct connection both. Under control PowerTool software, PowerCal board performs loading verification battery configuration parameters cell models PS40X EEPROM memory. addition, PowerCal platform provides complete precision system calibrating current, voltage temperature measurements Smart Battery, eliminating need expensive meters power supplies. During calibration, PowerCal board accurately measures current, voltage temperature compares these measured values those reported Smart Battery. Calibration values then loaded into programmable storage used chip compensate measurements made during normal operation. Reported values from PowerSmart therefore corrected eliminate known, measured errors. PowerCal platform accomplishes calibration with programmable load precision measurement hardware that known, constant discharge current drawn from battery pack. programmable load circuit capable drawing continuous discharge power from battery pack during calibration using natural convection cooling. Higher discharge currents supported reduced duty cycles, and/or with forced cooling. addition, there provisions user their external charger load, 10A. PowerCal board designed support both development test environments. Both RS-232 RS-485 interfaces present that board operate with stand-alone connection (RS-232), with multidrop connection (RS-485) host hardware supports PowerCal boards interfaced multidrop link from port. result, boards interfaced single with ports. PowerCal boards rack (2.25" board spacing); they also panel mounted. Extensive safety features include production proven EMI/ESD protection, optical isolation serial ports protective fuses. Fuses protect device under test, PowerCal hardware connected external charger load. board implemented using layers with dedicated ground plane. I/Os connected bypass capacitors earth ground. Microchip PowerCal platform very powerful, versatile calibration, test evaluation system. used variety ways, single board development environment multi-board system high volume production environment. instructions that follow will guide through setup each features board. References modules refer products assembled into packs connected cells. Power provided board connector with power supply wall adapter.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
With current firmware, PowerCal board perform programming test packs modules calibration pack cell voltages packs. Apply power (24V board either connector using wall adapter, connector. single PowerCal board connected serial port configure jumpers RS-232 connect connector serial port. multiple boards port, configure jumpers RS-485 connect connector RS-485 connector card. Additional PowerCal boards added connecting first board, next, using standard (straight-through) serial cable. seven boards added this manner. jumper give each board unique address. Install Microchip's PowerTool software calibration platform ready use.
Pack Programming, Calibration Test
Attach external pack contacts Microchip Smart Battery pack (V+, same terminals connector. Using PowerTool software, EEPROM programmed pack voltage calibrated. program memory, contact pack must connected connector. additional connection only necessary programming. Additional PowerTool features, such final test, also performed pack.
VCELL Calibration
Additional connections connector necessary calibration individual cell voltages. bottom cell stack connected cell stack connected intermediate cell connections made from topdown. other words, connected next cell below below below 3-cell packs, short 2-cell packs, short PowerTool software used calibrate cell voltages.
