Last Modified March 2003
Board Construction
board quite easy construct advisable read through these notes before starting. chip quite tiny should mounted underside ready use.
WARNING
aware that premounted chip sensitive static electricity discharge could damaged mishandling PCB. careful with board avoid touching tracks pads while assembling handle only edges.
Other chips this also sensitive static discharge. These PIC16F628 ICL232 chips. touch pins only handle them their ends. advisable sockets these chips.
Starting
first thing inspect shorted open tracks other damage. aware static warning when doing this check. When satisfied that well, then proceed. Start with flattest parts first, which resistors. Hold each resistor body thumb forefinger your other hand loosely bend both leads over right angles same time. make bends sharp, will find that they slide straight into mounting holes board. Leave pigtails each components until after soldering extra lead length serves heat sink component. leave soldering iron components long risk damaging them. usual method hold iron that touches component lead same time, then apply small solder. This operation should only take about second two. unsure your soldering ability, find some spare components practice these before building programmer board. Check that each solder joint bright shiny doesn't look like dull blob which could mean solder joint. solder should flow freely onto component lead solder good joint. After resistors soldered recheck your work then mount diodes.
There LEDs that mounted next. Make sure they oriented correctly. Anode marked longer leads component. Cathode flat surface body also marked board.
Next, supplied, mount socket PIC16F628 chip. mount poly (MKT) capacitors. Most these look same, check values make sure they inserted into correct positions. Then solder ceramic capacitors. Next, mount electrolytic capacitors. These polarity sensitive components make sure they mounted properly. positive lead longer than negative lead, negative lead also marked side capacitor. overlay, there holes marked positive lead each these components.
Mount BC558 next shown overlay. next part mount 6MHz crystal. mount DPDT switch socket. solder RS232 socket, socket power jack board followed 7805 78L08 regulators, again carefully checking orientation. last things board rubber feet supplied. These stick underside PCB, each corner. should over your work inspect unsoldered joints check components correct orientation placement.
satisfied that well, then will need 16VDC power supply test board. Positive should inner connection power jack shown overlay. Connect power observe that power lights. not, turn power immediately check orientation diode power wiring. Re-check other mistakes. Turn power back light Make sure have multimeter ready measure volts Turn back measure voltage between test pads marked (5V) (Gnd). meter should read close volts. not, turn power immediately check that regulators inserted properly. over again check thoroughly incorrectly placed components, shorts open circuit joints. well, turn power again. Next, mount 7406 open collector inverter ICL232 chip, taking care chip orientation very hard remove these chips once soldered. Remember about chip handling static.
insert preprogrammed PIC16F628 into socket. towards power jack.
Image finished switched serial port.
Connect serial cable between board your This cable straight through type, null modem cable. other words, connects other end, etc. Make sure switch operated towards [SERIAL] side. programmer software kit. MicroPro.exe Click [File] Port double click label screen bring port window. Select port that will serial communications, then [OK]. Re-check power connections turn programmer board. should Board connected appear screen. not, check your cable, port setting also that switch properly. well, then simple system test, select 16F84 from chip select menu click Read. should some LEDs light programmer will read from existant chip. screen will most likely fill with0000's. turn prepare test. First off, disconnect serial cable move switch [USB] side.
enable capability your this project will need install special driver. This piece software that handles communications between special chip programmer PCB. Create driver directory into directory where your programmer software installed. C:\diyk149 default. Therefore would have directory called C:\diyk149\usb. drivers come flavours, plug play support plug play support. this programmer does have plug play support, that narrows down choice.
will need visit this page download this driver. drivers 98/2000/ME/XP (without support) Download unzip file into newly created directory.
visit this other page download application note that describes install driver your particular system.
example would download. AN232-03 AN232-05 Win2000 Download file into driver directory listed above. Open follow simple directions given file. This should only take minutes When driver installation completed, connect cable from programmer board. Make sure MicroPro.exe running
Turn board Nothing will appear happen this stage although message from Windows saying that found hardware. MicroPro.exe. Click [File] Port double click label screen bring port window. Select port that selected communications while installing driver, then take short while establish communications with port. When done port number will appear screen programmer ready port. well, then again simple system test, select 16F84 from chip select menu click Read. should some LEDs light programmer will read from existant chip. screen will most likely fill with 0000's. Your programmer ready use.
When using interface, always turn programmer before starting MicroPro.exe. When finished with programmer, close MicroPro.exe then turn board.
Failure this power sequence result stalled because responding port.
IMPORTANT
Please insert chip into programming socket unless board connected either serial port port MicroPro software running. controller board held reset state until MicroPro gains control this reset condition, there will stray voltages present programming socket.
Circuit Serial Programming
This programmer capable doing Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP). ICSP allows program PICmicro® that already plugged into it's target circuit. That chip does need programmer socket program circuits following page give some ICSP connection examples.
ICSP programming needs have control pins which used Clock Data. These usually PORTB pins RB7. also needs control MCLR pin(s). common ground connection must also made. some cases ICSP programmer cannot reliably control programming pins because connections these pins that form part your circuit. Voltage rise times critical programming your circuit draws much current, high capacitive load then ICSP work. your target circuit draws more than around 60mA, your circuit suitable external volt supply. then your circuit will need supply volt power. this case leave VccP wire disconnected. Some chips need have volt rail specifically controlled, will able programmed with VccP wire disconnected. 16F675 example. circuits will accept ICSP programming, cannot chip program properly using this mode, then only options totally isolate target board, just programming socket. aware that incorrect connections between your circuit ICSP connector cause damage both your circuit programmer.
Please note that programming supported.
