CHAPTER MECHANICAL STANDARDS Introduction
Touch Memories reprogrammable data carriers that identify objects they affixed Since these objects have abundance different shapes sizes, there many ways mount Touch Memory. This chapter provides details MicroCans, Touch Memory probes mounting techniques.
part number indicate package type customer-specific version. Customer-specific devices branded through (hexadecimal) combination with special family code. Independently this, customer specific name also place name "DALLAS".
III. Touch Memory Probes
Touch Memory read written with probe. basic probe shown Figure 3-3a. also available with tactile feedback (Figure 3-3b). standard probe usually preferred when probe fixed Touch Memory mobile. Touch Memory read mobile reader like Touch Pen, general long contact dwells required, probe with tactile feedback performs better. Touch Probes usually mounted panels. retaining ring pressed from back side provides sufficient mechanical hold (see Figure 3-3c). cross- shaped cross section Touch Probe's back prevents twisting connected wires after mounting. some applications, hand-held wand Touch Memories convenient. This wand consists hand- grip mount Touch Memory probe with tactile feedback. Figure shows details.
MicroCans Package Types
Touch Memory packaged flanged MicroCan shown Figure 3-1a. This package standard devices that contain internal energy source. Devices that powered master (parasite-powered) made available this package well thinner package (Figure 3-1b).
Stability
MicroCans made from solid stainless steel with thickness 0.254 insulating material between bottom part contact UV-inhibited black polypropylene. This design gives excellent mechanical stability corrosion-resistant. MicroCans withstand mechanical shocks 9.81 m/s2) directions. drop from height concrete floor does damage contents. same holds constant force Newton either side can. Repeated probing does degrade contact since there plating; Touch Memory will withstand minimum million probing cycles.
Touch Memory Mounts Through-Mount
flange bottom MicroCan makes part ideally suited through-mounting. This technique used mount Touch Memories personal identification labels access control time stamping accounting purposes. Figure shows practical example. retaining ring DS9093RA press Touch Memory from front side label. through-mount system also used mount Touch Memories large containers. Touch Memory retainer shown Figure easily screwed metal plastic containers. This plastic part designed MicroCan. Since bottom MicroCan pressed against container because guarding retainer, this mounting well suited harsh environments. retainer Figure screwed pop-riveted. special version retainer with instead hole allows only screw rivet reduce mounting time.
Temperature Range
Touch Memories (DS1990A, DS1982 DS1986) have been specified extended temperature range -40°C +85°C (-40°F 185°F). operating temperature range DS1920 even larger. Devices containing lithium cells (DS1991 DS1996) should stored operated below -40°C above +70°C (-40°F 158°F). -55°C electrolyte lithium cell freezes; above 85°C vapor pressure electrolyte increases, causing diffusion through seal, which dries cell after some time.

MicroCans very stable. that reason, they directly mounted metal casings. this, first cavity must milled into metal. Then Touch Memory inserted cavity pressed down that tightly holds MicroCan position. Figure shows this technique. order contact Touch Memory with probe, minimum clearance around Touch Memory required (Figure 3-6a). protrusion Touch Memory above surface must least similar mounting technique used with plastic keyring shown Figure 3-8. slot this keyring provides elasticity insert withdraw flanged MicroCans. Figure 3-10 shows standard clip DS9094F surface mount version DS9094FS used with MicroCan. These clips similar common battery clips prevent contact tries insert MicroCan reverse direction. contrast DS9098, DS9094F accepts MicroCan horizontally vertically. principle, possible mount Touch Memories rotating parts sliding spring pressed contacts, shown Figure 3-11, though mounting hardware this application available standard product. MicroCan will completely into DS9098 retainer, flange about will stick pressed into DS9100. probe, DS9100 allows reading Touch Memories contact. further pressure stiff springs DS9100's outer ring will hold MicroCan sufficiently give good contact both ground data lid. increase strength holding, future versions MicroCans have tiny indentation outer rim. This will have impact probe contact mounting techniques explained this chapter.
Spring Hold
Certain applications require mounting Touch Memories printed circuit boards. most advanced single-piece retainer MicroCans DS9098 (see Figure 3-9). Like MicroCan, made from stainless steel. Selective tin-lead plating provides optimal solderability. design, this retainer compatible with standard pick-and-place cleaning equipment. first insertion Touch Memory, inner contact breaks away from outer ring acts spring hold MicroCan with force minimum Newtons. cross section view Figure 3-9a

Special Mounting Examples
Some applications require mechanical tolerances that large compared size Touch Memory. such cases, surface Touch Memory extended obtain required tolerances. this build Touch with Touch Memory inside (Figure 3-13). Another possibility handling container, Touch Memory into middle, mount again keeping part electrically insulated from other (Figure 3-14).
Summary
Touch Memory housed stainless steel package. Special probes, clips retainers available reading writing Touch Memory. Touch Memory mounted objects using either special retainers, metal forming techniques adhesives. Further, MicroCan's surface extended applications that require larger contact surfaces.
