Introduction technology changed peripheral industry ever since introduction September 1998 then later April 2000. interface initially intended retire serial parallel ports creating universal interface serial parallel devices, quickly gained acceptance standard interface wide variety devices including keyboards, mice, game pads, scanners printers. High-speed USB2.0, with Mbps speeds, proliferated mass storage devices with ever increasing capacities gave capabilities connect standard IDE/SATA hard drive also spread outside PDA's, portable devices. With advent specification, "limited embedded host" born negating need data transfer between capable devices. similar revolution occurred almost simultaneously home networking. With more more innovation wireless wired networking areas, having affordable wired and/or wireless Ethernet network solution, within consumer homes having multiple PCs/laptops common place. Problem Statement Consumers prefer peripherals with interface, in-line with fact that being shipped today have multiple host controllers multiple slots, with little room legacy serial/parallel ports. This posed additional challenges consumers: equipment close proximity resulting large desk space. Requirement additional power ports (For self powered devices). Tangled/Messy cable network behind devices available over home network, example, data from storage device hard drive Inability share device between multiple users, example, scanner printer
inability share device such non-networked only printer scanner hard drive drive among many users house-hold created inconvenience, which required some form solution.

solution: Network port! most obvious solution somehow make device available "Shared Resource" over wired wireless Ethernet network. wide range devices available today from OEMs achieve this target ranging from simple print server solutions multiple port networking solution. These devices more less perform same functions: Convert incoming traffic from device into Ethernet packet transmitting network vice versa. some variation client software, which would make these networked devices appear devices operating system.
Limitations existing solutions most important challenges faced such "conversion" devices following: Since there bandwidth mismatch between high speed USB2.0 device (480 Mbps) Ethernet network (100 Mbps), they limited speed operation forms devices (Web Cams, printer, mass storage) supported same box. They "limited" number type devices which they support They have software only solution running embedded processor, with little hardware acceleration Ethernet side, limiting speed operation devices. They multiple chip solutions (Processor, host controller, Ethernet PHY), increasing board size well cost.
Introducing MCS8140: Network Processor MosChip MCS8140 highly integrated general purpose network processor that used variety products that require network connectivity. MCS8140 based ARM926EJ-S, 32-bit RISC microprocessor running MHz, delivering approximately MIPS MHz.

MCS8140 network processor four high speed Ports designed enable wide range USB-based devices over Network. (Internet Intranet). The Ethernet controller MCS8140 contains media access controller (MAC) physical layer (PHY). Ethernet interface connected directly external magnetics, LED's connectors. MCS8140 stateless engine. Amongst other features Segmentation offload (TSO) which layer passes very large segment through stack hardware, which segments into number packets. This method improves performance reducing per-packet software overheads within network stack. segmentation performed inside MCS8140 hardware generates headers each packet. MCS8140 implements List Processing Engine interrupt moderation feature. Interrupt moderation reduces hardware interrupts which generated controller order request cycles packet processing. 32-bit, 33MHz host interface supports devices which compatible compliant standard. controller support devices. This allows MCS8140 connect variety devices such 802.11x peripherals, Audio Controllers, PCI-SATA PCI-IDE controllers. Host interface also used Mini host, enable customers design products based existing Mini-PCI Cards. MCS8140 single chip solution with Ethernet (10/100) Four USB2.0 Phys integrated into chip available package, thus making cost effective easy design solution.
addition, MCS8140 provides alternate Ethernet configuration that does internal PHY. this configuration pins available GPIO interface. This feature enables MCS8140 used with external Ethernet Phy, like Fiber based applications using external Ethernet Phy. MCS8140 also robust Security Engine, this handles IPSec functions including DES, 3DES, AES, MD5, SHA-1 SHA-256 algorithms. IPSec feature MCS8140 used encrypt data integrated Ethernet interface.

Application Usage Scenarios Home usage Scenario trend towards consumer electronics devices emergence classes products. These products have rich functionality, multimedia capabilities, require connecting your laptop listening, sharing, downloading content. Within home, instance, family have based digital video camcorder, digital still camera, portable player, PDA, tablet printers, scanners, speakers drives personal video display device. share these devices between multiple laptops home without physically moving laptop device? MCS8140 Server makes this possible. make printers (including multi-function printers), scanners other types devices used shared network. MCS8140 Server solution connected local (home) network device plugged onto virtualized laptop network. figure above demonstrates typical home environment where Server allows sharing device network. Small office scenarios Connectivity issues other inconveniences meter connections hurt productivity slow adoption devices within work environment. Networked users particularly face connection challenges they move from place place want share printers other devices, hence simplifying their lives breaking meter limitation. Networked will enable colleagues more easily share devices each other's devices within office environment. Easy sharing scanners, printers, storage devices, other possible peripherals would possible. Exchanging large files based hard disk drives would possible over network instead physically transferring device from place other.

Case Study: Server Makes device Network device Network Printer Home small office environment where have multiple Laptops Desktop Machines, buying network printer would very much expensive. Instead convert printer network printer using MCS8140 Server. Connect printer MCS8140 server MCS8140 Print Server printer becomes network ready. Sever solution provides facility either dedicate printer share onto network. MCS8140 Srver also provides bidirectional facility monitor cartridge status, paper status etc. Networked drive MCS8140 server allows sharing based drive network. user network virtualize based drive connected Server onto local machine watch movies, read write data onto DVD. Networked Storage Many laptop users face problems with increasing number files running short hard disk space. They need upgrade their PC's with bigger storage devices they some based hard drives backup their data. upgrading bigger hard disk sizes, user needs carry some expert him. Incase drive, user needs connect every time needs backup data. Instead about saving files your home network. But where storage space network! Simple, connect drive MCS8140 server will provide dedicated storage space your network. backup your files watch movie files from hard drive network. Some typical office environments provide Network Attached Storage solutions which very much expensive. when compared MCS8140 Server solution which inexpensive robust solution would best bet. They require vice expert upgrade your drive operate

Surveillance Camera Surveillance camera. Reminds very much common CCTV based environment, where have multiple cameras network monitoring equipment. dedicated CCTV environment might very much expensive small office home network. Make webcam network camera. Just connect your camera MCS8140 server network camera ready use. need special software camera view video captured, instead same webcam based application watch real time video your Local machine.
Wired Wireless Multi Function Server Technology evolvement ease allowed different consumer equipment incorporate port them. Many such examples include Flash drives, Digital Cameras, Mobile Phones, PDA's Speakers, Skype headsets much more devices which uses communicate environment. these equipment networked using MCS8140 Server.
