CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
MC3371 MC3372 power narrowband receivers with operating frequency MHz. voltage design provides power drain, excellent sensitivity, good image rejection narrowband voice data link applications. This part combines mixer, (intermediate frequency) limiter with logarithmic response signal strength indicator, quadrature detector, active filter squelch trigger circuit. typical application, mixer amplifier converts input signal signal. Passing through external bandpass filter, signal into limiting amplifier detection circuit where audio signal recovered. conventional quadrature detector used. absence input signal indicated presence noise above desired audio frequencies. This "noise band" monitored active filter detector. squelch switch used mute audio when noise tone present. input signal level monitored meter drive circuit which detects amount signal limiting amplifier. amplifier approximately gain. MC3371 MC3372 different limiter quadrature detector circuits. MC3371 resistor providing internal biasing output limiter internally connected, both directly through capacitor quadrature detector; whereas, MC3372 these components provided internally. Thus, MC3371, external components necessary match ceramic filter, while MC3372, external biasing resistors needed between Pins respectively (see Figures 13). MC3371, parallel quadrature tank circuit connected externally from (similar MC3361). MC3372, quadrature capacitor needed externally from parallel ceramic discriminator with damping resistor also needed from (similar MC3357). above external quadrature circuitry provides phase shift center frequency enables recovered audio. damping resistor determines peak separation detector somewhat critical. resistor decreased, separation bandwidth increased recovered audio decreased. Receiver sensitivity dependent value this resistor bandwidth ceramic filter. chip composite recovered audio, consisting carrier component modulating signal, passed through pass filter amplifier reduce carrier component then which output impedance signal still requires further filtering eliminate carrier component, deemphasis, volume control, further amplification before driving loudspeaker. relative level composite recovered audio signal should considered proper interaction with audio post amplifier given load element. MC13060 recommended power audio amplifier. meter output indicates strength level output current proportional logarithm input signal amplitude. maximum source current available used drive meter detect carrier presence. This referred Received Strength Signal Indicator (RSSI). output provides current source. Thus, resistor ground yields voltage proportional input carrier signal level. value this resistor estimated (VCC(Vdc) V)/60 Vdc, resistor approximately provides maximum voltage swing about simple inverting output inverting input noninverting input connected used noise triggered squelch active noise filter. bandpass filter designed with external impedance elements discriminate between frequencies. With external detector, filtered audio signal checked tone signal presence noise above normal audio band. This information applied

Since input impedance strongly influenced internal biasing resistor capacitance, useful gain actually much higher than shown standard power gain measurement. Smith Chart plot Figure shows measured mixer input impedance versus input frequency with mixer input matched source impedance given frequencies. order assure stable operation under matched conditions, necessary provide shunt resistor ground.
