Delta-Sigma ADCs
Delta-sigma converters capable very high accuracy, ideal converting signals which range frequency from several megahertz. delta-sigma ADC, input signal oversampled modulator, then filtered decimated digital filter producing high-resolution data stream lower sampling rate. delta-sigma architecture approach allows resolution traded speed both traded power. This nearly continuous relationship between data rate, resolution, power consumption makes delta-sigma converters extraordinarily flexible. many delta-sigma converters, this relationship programmable, allowing single device handle multiple measurement requirements. Because delta-sigma converters oversample their inputs, they perform most anti-aliasing filtering digital domain. Modern VLSI design techniques have brought cost complex digital filters below cost their analog equivalents. Formerly unusual functions, such simultaneous 50/60Hz notch filtering, built into many deltasigma ADCs costing less than equivalent SAR-based system with analog filtering. Typical high-resolution applications delta-sigma ADCs include industrial process control, analytical test instrumentation, medical instrumentation, digital audio.
Technical Information
Almost delta-sigma ADCs have inherently differential inputs. They measure actual difference between voltages, instead difference between voltage ground. differential input structure deltasigma makes ideal measuring differential sources such bridge sensors thermocouples. Frequently, input amplifiers required these applications. Delta-sigma converters work differently than converters. takes "snapshot" input voltage analyzes determine corresponding digital code. delta-sigma measures input signal certain period time outputs digital code corresponding signal's average over that time. important remember deltasigma converters operate, particularly designs incorporating multiplexing synchronization.

Successive-approximation register (SAR) converters frequently architecture choice medium-to-high-resolution applications with medium sampling rates. ADCs range resolution from 18-bits with speeds typically less than 10MSPS. They provide power consumption small form factor. converter operates same principle balance scale. scale, unknown weight placed side balance point, while known weights placed other side rejected kept until sides perfectly balanced. unknown weight then measured totaling kept, known weights. converter, input signal unknown weight, which sampled held. This voltage then compared successive known voltages, results output converter. Unlike weigh scale, conversion occurs very quickly through charge redistribution techniques. Because samples input signal holds sampled value until conversion complete, this architecture does make assumptions about nature input signal, signal therefore does need continuous. This makes architecture ideal applications where multiplexer used prior converter, applications where converter only need make measurement once every seconds, applications where "fast" measurement required. conversion time remains same cases, little sample-toconversion latency compared pipeline delta-sigma converter. converters ideal real-time applications such industrial control, motor control, power management, portable/batterypowered instruments, PDAs, test equipment data/signal acquisition.
Technical Information
Modern ADCs sample capacitor that charged voltage input signal. ADC's input capacitance, input impedance, external circuitry, settling time will required sample capacitor's voltage match measured input voltage. Minimizing external circuitry's source impedance minimize this settling time, assuring that input signal accurately acquired within ADC's acquisition time. more troublesome design constraint, however, dynamic load that ADC's input presents driving circuitry. driver input must able handle this dynamic load settle desired accuracy within required acquisition time.
ADC's reference input circuitry presents similar load reference voltage. While reference voltage supposed very stable voltage, dynamic load that ADC's reference input presents makes achieving this goal somewhat difficult. Thus, buffer circuitry required reference voltage, used this similar requirements that used driving input; fact, requirements even higher than input signal. Some ADCs feature internal reference buffer. Buffering these inputs using amps with low, wideband output impedance best preserve accuracy with these converters.
