MAX6138 precision, two-terminal shunt mode, bandgap voltage reference available fixed reverse breakdown voltages 1.2205V, 2.048V, 2.5V, 3.0V, 4.096V, 5.0V. Ideal space-critical applications, MAX6138 offered subminiature 3-pin SC70 surface-mount package (1.8mm 1.8mm), smaller than comparable devices SOT23 surface-mount packages. Laser-trimmed resistors ensure precise initial accuracy. With 25ppm/°C temperature coefficient, device offered three grades initial accuracy ranging from 0.1% 0.5%. MAX6138 60µA 15mA shuntcurrent capability with low-dynamic impedance, ensuring stable reverse breakdown voltage accuracy over wide range operating temperatures currents. MAX6138 does require external stabilizing capacitor while ensuring stability with capacitive loads. MAX6138 higher precision device smaller package than LM4040/LM4050. Detailed Description
MAX6138 shunt reference uses bandgap principle produce stable, accurate voltage. device behaves similarly ideal zener diode; fixed voltage maintained across output terminals when biased with 60µA 15mA reverse current. MAX6138 behaves similarly silicon diode when biased with forward currents 10mA. Figure shows typical operating circuit. MAX6138 ideal providing stable reference from high-voltage power supply.

Applications Information
MAX6138's internal pass transistor used maintain constant output voltage (VSHUNT) sinking necessary amount current across source resistor. source resistance (RS) determined from load current (ILOAD) range, supply voltage (VS) variations, VSHUNT, desired quiescent current. Choose value when minimum ILOAD maximum. Maintain minimum ISHUNT 60µA times. value should large enough keep ISHUNT less than 15mA proper regulation when maximum ILOAD minimum. prevent damage device, ISHUNT should never exceed 20mA. Therefore, value bounded following equation: [VS(MIN) [60µA ILOAD(MAX)] [VS(MAX) [20mA ILOAD(MIN)] Choosing larger resistance minimizes total power dissipation circuit reducing shunt current (PD(TOTAL) ISHUNT). Provide safety margin incorporate worst-case tolerance resistor used. Ensure that resistor's power rating adequate, using following general power equation: ISHUNT (VS(MAX) VSHUNT)

Temperature Performance
