_General Description
MAX8877/MAX8878 low-noise, low-dropout linear regulators operate from 2.5V 6.5V input deliver 150mA. These devices pin-compatible with industry-standard '2982 offer improved dropout voltage. Typical output noise 30µVRMS, typical dropout only 165mV 150mA. output voltage preset voltages range 1.5V 5.0V, 100mV increments. Designed with internal P-channel MOSFET pass transistor, MAX8877/MAX8878 maintain 100µA supply current, independent load current dropout voltage. Other features include 10nA logic-controlled shutdown mode, short-circuit thermal-shutdown protection, reverse battery protection. MAX8878 also includes auto-discharge function, which actively discharges output voltage ground when device placed shutdown. Both devices come regular thin 5-pin SOT23 packages.

_Pin Description
NAME SHDN FUNCTION Regulator Input. Supply voltage range from 2.5V 6.5V. Bypass with capacitor (see Capacitor Selection Regulator Stability section). Ground. This also functions heatsink. Solder large circuit-board ground plane maximize power dissipation. Active-Low Shutdown Input. logic reduces supply current 10nA. MAX8878, logic also causes output voltage discharge GND. Connect normal operation. Reference-Noise Bypass. Bypass with low-leakage, 0.01µF ceramic capacitor reduced noise output. Regulator Output. Sources 150mA. Bypass with (<0.2 typical ESR) capacitor VOUT 2.5V 3.3µF VOUT 2.5V.

MAX8877/MAX8878 low-noise, low-dropout, low-quiescent-current linear regulators designed primarily battery-powered applications. parts available with preset output voltages ranging from 1.5V 100mV increments. These devices supply loads 150mA. illustrated Figure MAX8877/MAX8878 consist 1.25V reference, error amplifier, P-channel pass transistor, internal feedback voltage divider. 1.25V bandgap reference connected error amplifier's inverting input. error amplifier compares this reference with feedback voltage amplifies difference. feedback voltage lower than
REVERSE BATTERY PROTECTION

Output Voltage
MAX8877/MAX8878 supplied with factory-set output voltages from 1.5V 5.0V, 100mV increments. Except MAX887_EUK29 MAX887_EUK32 (which have output voltage preset 2.84V 3.15V, respectively), two-digit suffix allows customer choose output voltage 100mV increments. example, MAX8877EUK33 preset output voltage 3.3V (see Expanded Ordering Information). Internal P-Channel Pass Transistor
MAX8877/MAX8878 feature typical P-channel MOSFET pass transistor. This provides several advantages over similar designs using pass transistors, including longer battery life. P-channel MOSFET requires base drive, which reduces quiescent current considerably. PNP-based regulators waste considerable current dropout when pass transistor saturates. They also high base-drive currents under large loads. MAX8877/MAX8878 suffer from these problems consume only 100µA quiescent current whether dropout, light-load, heavy-load applications (see Typical Operating Characteristics).
Reverse Battery Protection
MAX8877/MAX8878 have unique protection scheme that limits reverse supply current when either SHDN falls below ground. Their circuitry monitors polarity these pins disconnects internal circuitry parasitic diodes when battery reversed. This feature prevents device damage.
Noise Reduction
external 0.01µF bypass capacitor conjunction with internal 200k resistor, creates 80Hz lowpass filter noise reduction. MAX8877/MAX8878 exhibit 30µVRMS output voltage noise with 0.01µF COUT 10µF. This negligible most applications. Start-up time minimized power-on circuit that pre-charges bypass capacitor. Current Limit
MAX8877/MAX8878 include current limiter, which monitors controls pass transistor's gate voltage, limiting output current 390mA. design purposes, consider current limit 160mA minimum 500mA maximum. output shorted ground indefinite amount time without damaging part.
Thermal-Overload Protection
Thermal-overload protection limits total power dissipation MAX8877/MAX8878. When junction temperature exceeds +155°C, thermal sensor signals shutdown logic, turning pass transistor allowing cool. thermal sensor will turn pass transistor again after IC's junction temperature cools 15°C, resulting pulsed output during continuous thermal-overload conditions. Thermal-overload protection designed protect MAX8877/MAX8878 event fault conditions. continual operation, exceed absolute maximum junction-temperature rating +150°C.

Capacitor Selection Regulator Stability
Normally, capacitor MAX8877/ MAX8878's input 10µF capacitor output. Larger input capacitor values lower ESRs provide better supply-noise rejection line-transient response. Reduce noise improve load-transient response, stability, power-supply rejection using large output capacitors. stable operation over full temperature range with load currents 150mA, (min) ceramic capacitor recommended VOUT 2.5V 3.3µF VOUT 2.5V. Note that some ceramic dielectrics exhibit large capacitance variation with temperature. With dielectrics such Y5V, necessary increase capacitance factor more ensure stability temperatures below -10°C. With dielectrics, should sufficient operating temperatures VOUT 2.5V. graph Region

Stable Load Current shown Typical Operating Characteristics. 0.01µF bypass capacitor output voltage noise. Increasing capacitance will slightly decrease output noise, increase start-up time. Values above 0.1µF provide performance advantage recommended (see Shutdown Exit Delay graphs Typical Operating Characteristics). components output response: shift from output impedance load current change, transient response. Input-Output (Dropout) Voltage
output voltage greater than minimum input voltage (2.5V), regulator's minimum input-output voltage differential dropout voltage) determines lowest usable supply voltage. battery-powered systems, this will determine useful end-of-life battery voltage. Because MAX8877/MAX8878 Pchannel MOSFET pass transistor, their dropout voltage function drain-to-source on-resistance (RDS(ON)) multiplied load current (see Typical Operating Characteristics).
PSRR Operation from Sources Other than Batteries
MAX8877/MAX8878 designed deliver dropout voltages quiescent currents batterypowered systems. Power-supply rejection 63dB frequencies rolls above 10kHz. When operating from sources other than batteries, improved supply-noise rejection transient response achieved increasing values input output bypass capacitors, through passive filtering techniques.
