This document Users' Guide, written person designing-in, connecting using Able Systems A104C single-chip printer controller EPSON M-160 series 4-needle mini-printer mechanisms. Please read carefully before making connection. A104C enhanced replacement A160C series controller chips, shares many features range. However, should noted that although every effort been made simplify re-drafting layouts, connections entirely different. Throughout this document, designation A160C generally taken represent A150C, A160C, A163C, A164C, national variants these devices. ON-LINE INFORMATION Able Systems maintains site World Wide Web. A104C INSTALLATION
A104C must installed circuit generally corresponding that Appendix. responsibility accepted customers' applications based other design. essential external requirements A104C are: clean power supply timing crystal ceramic resonator circuit (nominally serial data interface used) reset generator providing positive-going pulse least oscillator cycles (typically microseconds) after oscillator established. pulse will normally sufficient. motor drive common solenoid drive circuit Four solenoid drive circuits Processing circuits mechanism tacho, reed switch user interface applicable recommended that power supply controller circuits separate from supply mechanism motor solenoid circuits, minimise interference. Optionally, EEPROM (E2PROM) type 9346 attached pins A104C will recognize presence EEPROM configure appropriately initial power-up. Serial parallel data modes selected using Parallel mode selected this held (0V) reset time Serial mode selected this held high (pullup +5V) reset time Serial data Baud rates selected pins (D5) (D6) when chip serial mode. Serial data Baud rates: 1200 2400 9600

A104C OPERATION PROGRAMMING
Mechanism selection four-needle EPSON mini-printer mechanisms (M150, M160, M163, M164 M170) supported single A104C device. Mechanism selection automatic. chip exercises mechanism first power-up, type sensed counting tacho pulses head cycle. result stored EEPROM, subsequent power-ups mechanism identity read from there. EEPROM fitted, chip will carry mechanism selection test every power-up. Printing modes data buffer Character printing modes include graphics, inverted, double height double width A160C series. Graphics mode cancelled every line, whereas combinations double height width remain force until cancelled command. Note that whereas A160C ESCape sequence cleared data buffer, A104 will print data before ESCape code then implement mode selection. data buffer accommodates bytes, which (unlike A160C) extend over many physical print lines, depending mechanism data format; data entering buffer previous data being printed. Character sets addition country-specific sets A160C, full 224-character supported. Previous versions A160C family controller chips have been supplied programmed with French, German, "Scandinavian", Danish/Norwegian, Swedish, Japanese Spanish character variations (often special order). A104C contains these variants, which selected EEPROM setting (after software command) jumpers. selection made from host software structure command follows: <ESC><127><n> where byte form [X,X,X,X,B3,B2,B1,B0] don't care) Country selection: Character Full French German Scandinavian Danish Swedish Japanese Spanish

Operational notes EEPROM system designers power A104C chip attempts read from EEPROM memory location code read back "Hi" assumes that there EEPROM connected, that contains useful information, which read into appropriate A104C locations. chip then exits power routine. code "Hi" read back from EEPROM, there either useful information stored EEPROM there EEPROM connected chip. this event chip will cycle mechanism identify mechanism type tacho edge which furthest away from mechanism reset signal minimise line jitter). chip will then attempt write "Hi" other default setup data EEPROM. chip then attempts read EPROM: chip reads back code "Hi", mechanism data setup data been stored EEPROM, chip exits power routine. second time reading EEPROM code word "Hi" found, chip assumes there EEPROM attached uses jumper settings character information Pins inverted mode hardware select chip exits power routine. print quality deteriorates dotlines being displaced, EEPROM cleared chip forced repeat first-time initialisation sending code <ESC><125>. Parallel Serial Interface Setup "classic" mode, parallel interface selected having (logic "0") power some applications port driving this indeterminate power alternative parallel select provided. either serial/parallel select pins held ground start then parallel mode selected. Both pins must left high select serial data. data selected when using character set, otherwise data ignored. Serial mode, data selected when using character set, otherwise data bits assumed. Busy Output Signal controller asserts Busy output (Pin logic "1", +5V) when input buffer character away from being full. following character will, however, loaded into input buffer. This avoids data being lost host responding busy signal immediately (such with double-buffered UART PC). /Attachment: Appendix (Schematic) A104C Users' Guide Page
