APPLICATION
BE1-50/51B single phase self powered, microprocessor based time overcurrent relay. relay designed applications requiring time delayed coordination phase ground overcurrent conditions. relay used provide coordinated protection overhead underground distribution circuits. Other applications include overcurrent back-up protection transformers generators, protection neutral grounding resistors reactors. Since time-current characteristics included within relay, standard relay ordered before coordination study completed, thereby allowing physical construction proceed. series relays have curves that match ABB/Westinghouse time curve shape. series adds five unique GE-type curves. Both series include curves. This also advantage changes system configuration coordination accomplished without hardware change. Models included (200 series) which have memory replicate decaying reset electromechanical relays even when power relay lost. series applications that require coordination with resetting nearby electromechanical relays. instantaneous overcurrent element standard relay. This element designed minimize transient overreach. instantaneous element includes selectable delay characteristics improved coordination with downstream devices customer requirements.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Aux. output provided replacement units. Figure Functional Block Diagram CURRENT INPUT single phase current from Amp, Amp, 50/60 system current transformer (CT) applied BE1-50/51B. This input current provides both power sensing quantity relay. current applied relay provides energy internal power supply. When sufficient current available, Active/Pickup will turn green. applications where circuit loading conditions less than that required illuminate LED, relay remains operable will provide overcurrent protection. sensing input transformer provides quantity scaled measured Time Instantaneous functions. When Active/Pickup green, microprocessor active executing code. Operating power from power supply applied microprocessor supervisor circuit. When input current falls below acceptable level, supervisor circuit interrupts microprocessor halts further operation. watchdog timer monitors microprocessor specific pulses indicating proper program operation. something occurs disrupt microprocessor, these pulses stop, watchdog timer times sends reset pulse microprocessor. microprocessor resets resumes normal operation.

OUTPUTS TIME contacts 51AUX) closed accordance with conditions defined selected time characteristic equation sensed current magnitude. sensed current exceeds INST PICKUP setting, INST contacts (50) closed. Breakers controlled output contacts manually trip tested inserting jumper between TIME INST MANUAL TRIP test points front panel. TIME ELEMENT CHARACTERISTIC SHAPES BS142 CURVES time characteristic curves follow relation: Time trip MN-C instantaneous reset characteristic forces timer zero when input current falls below setting. This fast reset characteristic prevents ratcheting effect electro-mechanical relay disks that occurs repeated faults. decaying reset characteristic replicates decaying reset electromechanical relay disks. Models with style numbers series continue decaying process even when input current goes zero. Models with style numbers series reset immediately when input current drops below minimum required power-up relay (.5A models 0.1A models). TIME DIAL RANGE ACCURACY TIME DIAL range steps. setting results instantaneous operation without intentional time delay. INSTANTANEOUS ELEMENT CHARACTERISTICS characteristic phase faults faster because relay will powered-up. However, tripping characteristic ground applications slightly longer allow time power-up relay. This longer trip time ground applications beneficial because helps avoid nuisance trips. These timing characteristics shown Figure Additional definite time delays 0.1, seconds added instantaneous element series units; series units have only seconds. definite delay determined switches circuit card. OUTPUTS Separate output contacts provided TIME (51) INST (50) trip functions. additional auxiliary output relay AUX) included. This output operates simultaneously with TIME output relay. output contacts configured normally open (NO). MANUAL TRIP TESTING relay provided with front panel test points allow shorting output terminals verify external control circuit wiring. TARGETS target indicators provided standard feature BE1-50/51B. These magnetically latched, current operated targets provide visual indication trip TIME INST output contact. These targets must manually reset after abnormal condition been removed corrected.
