BOARDFLEX SENSITIVE APPLICATIONS SOLUTION:
predominant failure mode multilayer ceramic capacitors cracking caused board flexure that results capacitance loss, leakage more seriously, high current shorts. short circuit condition cause further failures downstream components. Extensive board flexure testing performed OMD-Capacitors soldered onto glass epoxy resin boards. boards were then subjected flexure (see diagram below) Insulation Resistance (IR) each tested capacitor measured. remained OhmF cases because these designs allow cracks bridge across opposing electrodes creating conductive pathways. Commercial grade product experience serious loss eventually short when tested under same conditions.

POLYMER TERMINATION
Polymer termination provides additional protection against board flexure damage absorbing greater mechanical thermal stresses. Componenets packaged, transported, stored handled same standard terminated product. Wave reflow soldering MLCC does require modification equipment and/or process.Polymer termination greatly reduces risk mechanical cracking however does completely eliminate.
