General Description
This evaluation board provides platform evaluating MIC2171 boost converter power evaluation board schematic shown Figure jumper allows easy selection preset custom output voltages. MIC3172 switching regulator combines switching transistor, control circuitry reference single package, which provides switching output voltage regulation. entire circuit takes less than board space with output power capability greater than efficiency full load better than 80%. MIC3172 switches frequency 100kHz. Requirements boost evaluation board requires input power source, which should able supply minimum amps. output loaded with resistive active load. active load constant current constant resistance mode. Precautions evaluation board does have input reverse polarity protection. Applying negative voltage terminal (with respect ground) permanently damage components board. maximum input voltage board 16V, limited input capacitor's voltage rating. Exceeding this voltage extended period time will damage capacitors. tantalum output capacitors rated 10V. exceed rating these capacitors. higher output voltages required, output capacitors (10V rating) output diode (40V rating) must replaced with components rated application. maximum input voltage MIC2171 internal switch MIC2171 rated 65V.
Circuit Operation When MIC2171 switching transistor turns current flowing into switch equal inductor current, Energy stored inductor current continues flow. voltage across equal (neglecting switch voltage) reverse voltage across diode VOUT. When switching transistor turns current flowing inductor forces voltage across inductor reverse polarity. voltage across inductor rises until conducts clamps voltage VOUT VD1. energy inductor discharged into output. peak diode current equal peak inductor current, provide compensation stabilize voltage control loop. create zero feedback loop compensate pole formed output capacitance (C3, output resistance. creates pole that compensates zero caused output capacitance output capacitor ESR. Output Voltage Setting Three standard voltages selected placing shorting jumper across proper pins header Open resistor location allows user select non-standard output voltage. resistor size 0805. desired output voltage, resistor value calculated equation below.

Output Capacitors Both output capacitance capacitors (equivalent series resistance) affect output ripple. primary contributor output ripple. impedance
tantalum capacitors provided minimize effective reduce output ripple voltage. While capacitors necessary higher output currents, only capacitor required when output current less than 100mA when very ripple voltage issue.
