Unidirectional Bi-directional Differences
Silicon transient voltage suppressor (TVS) data sheets normally depict unidirectional types. These have either suffix suffix denoting lower clamping voltage level. bottom data sheet Features section notation "CA" suffix denote bi-directional. Device series specifically bi-directional applications noted data sheet masthead. Unidirectional TVSs normal diode characteristic curve with "Avalanche Conduction" third quadrant shown Figure normal operating polarity where cathode biased positively circuit shown. This characteristic clips short duration spikes avalanche direction shown "TVS Load."
Figure Unidirectional
first quadrant Figure where anode biased positively relative cathode, diode forward-voltage characteristic voltage "Forward Conduction" mode. Transients also clipped this direction shown, level order volt two. Higher power devices including 15KPxxx 30KPxxx series stacked have higher values. Unidirectional devices used across power signal lines. addition their normal operating direction third quadrant, forward voltage first quadrant clamps negative spikes. example, CMOS very vulnerable transients their forward direction, clamping forward voltage diode direction prevents failure. Many discrete components fail from voltage spikes forward conduction mode, hence need unidirectional protection. either unidirectional bi-directional device will work given circuit, unidirectional usually selected lower cost.

MicroNote
Bi-directional TVSs bilaterally symmetrical shown Figure They intended power lines signal lines having both positive negative excursions. unidirectional devices were used applications, they would clip voltage swing negative direction since they conduct voltage negative direction would clip side. This problem would also occur with signal lines. current unidirectional applications which polarity importance, engineers occasionally specify bi-directional devices ensure against wrong polarity hookups field installation.
Figure Bi-Directional
Bi-directional devices normally made with junctions same chip, with chips back back. With either these designs, capacitance zero operating volts typically one-half that unidirectional configuration same breakdown voltage selection. There polarity symbol cathode band bi-directional devices.
