Main Output
Connect +2.7V +5.5V supply pad. Connect ground pad. Connect +0.8V supply VBATT pad. Connect ground pad. Connect voltmeter VOUT pad. Verify that shunt (SHDN) across pins Rotate potentiometer (R1) midposition. Turn power supply, verify that output approximately 9.0V LEDs moderately lit. instructions selecting other means adjusting brightness, refer Adjusting Current section MAX1698 data sheet.
Changing Maximum Current
maximum current determined feedback resistor current 300mV Resistors must also match value balance current each bank. Refer Setting Output Current section MAX1698 data sheet more information selecting other maximum current settings.
Evaluating Off-Board LEDs
MAX1698 evaluate off-board LEDs. Current resistors must removed from kit. LEDs will longer function. external feedback resistor must connected between pad. Refer Setting Output Current section MAX1698 data sheet more information selecting maximum currentsetting resistor.
Detailed Description
MAX1698 contains switching-regulator current-source circuit. circuit requires +2.7V +5.5V power (VCC); however, power input (VBATT) accept wide input voltage range from +0.8V forward voltage array (+7V array supplied kit). board drive +24V output, limited open-circuit protection zener (D2). Output current adjusted with control brightness. boost converter operates maximum frequency 500kHz. MAX1698 evaluate additional off-board LEDs. instructions evaluating additional LEDs, Evaluating Off-Board LEDs section.
Evaluating Output Voltages Over +24V
Zener diode clamps output voltage VOUT +24V array circuit opens. evaluate output voltages greater than +24V, zener diode must replaced. Choose zener diode above maximum MOSFET breakdown voltage should exceed zener voltage. Output capacitor C2's voltage rating must exceed zener diode voltage.
