MAX1617A Temperature Sensor Evaluation
MAX1617A evaluation kit) demonstration platform MAX1617A temperature-sensor monitors both junction temperature temperature remote (external) diode-connected transistor, converts these temperatures 8-bit, 2-wire serial data. 2N3904 remote temperature-sensor transistor comes soldered board SOT23 package, more realistic experiments, easily removed connected through twisted pair terminals. designed connected standard IBM-compatible parallel printer port. Signals from parallel port converted open-drain SMBusclock data 74HC05 logic chip board. onboard MAX1615 linear regulator steps down unregulated input power glue logic, MAX1617A, SMBus pullup resistors. software runs under Windows95, 2000. This user-friendly program menu-driven offers graphic user interface with control buttons numeric data displays. Note: Windows 2000 requires installation driver; refer Win2000.pdf Win2000.txt located diskette.

Quick Start
computer running Windows 2000 (Note: Windows 2000 requires installation driver; refer Win2000.pdf Win2000.txt located diskette.)
Recommended Equipment
Parallel printer cable, straight-through 25-pin maleto-female type power supply, 50mA
Procedure
MAX1617A fully assembled tested. Follow steps below verify board operation. turn power supply until connections completed: hardware. Connect parallel cable computer port board else simply plug board directly into port without cable). parallel port typically labeled PRINTER. Adjust power supply 9VDC connect POS9 ground terminals kit. apply voltages higher than 28V.

Install software. MAX1617A.EXE software from floppy from hard drive. Simply Windows program manager program. Another autodetect routine attempts find MAX1617A cycling through nine possible addresses. After parallel port address userinterface panel appears. MAX1617A operating default power-on-reset (POR) mode, auto-converting 0.25Hz rate. display shows current temperature both remote local channels. Note that places where slave address asks 8-bit value, must 7-bit slave address MAX1617A determined ADD0 ADD1 with last always one.
Data Logging
Data logging commands accessed pulldown menu labeled "MAX1617A". Data logging saves temperature data both channels text file that includes time/date stamp next each data point. high conversion rates, every data point logged, depending speed disk drive where file being written. stop data logging, select Logging from pull-down menu.
Detailed Description
User-Interface Panel
user interface easy operate; mouse, press navigate with arrow keys. Each buttons corresponds bits command, conversion-rate, configuration bytes. Clicking them generates correct SMBus write operation update internal registers. program continually polls device temperature data status, alerts rate faster than fastest conversion rate. change THIGH TLOW alarm-threshold comparison registers, select appropriate data field type value. Pressing Enter after typing values updates internal registers. make single-shot conversions, click Stop button under Configuration, then click Measure button. Single-shot conversions also performed while device auto-converting. singleshot command overrides automatic conversion. After single shot complete, device returns automatic operation. interrupt condition generated, typically temperature crossing alarm threshold levels, message appears alert box: "ALERT! LOW". clear interrupt, first eliminate condition that caused (typically resetting alarm threshold) then click Read Alert. This action reads Alert Response address, returns value current MAX1617A slave address, clears interrupt.
Jumper Switch Settings
jumpers MAX1617A slave address. default address 0101 (ADD0 ADD1 high-Z); other settings, jumper and/or must installed (Figure responds ADD0 corresponds ADD1; Table MAX1617A data sheet complete list slave addresses. MAX1617A must undergo power-on reset address become effective. slide switch, SW1, provided means force power-on reset MAX1617A. This switch simply disables power device. STBY hardware standby control input hard-wired VCC. order apply external disabling signal STBY, narrow board trace must first cut. Figure component placement guide. Figures board layout.
Operating Temperature Range
operating temperature range this +70°C, although MAX1617A itself rated -55°C +125°C. limitation maximum ratings other components board, such connector logic chips. Specifications aside, board tolerate -55°C +125°C temperatures. facilitate testing MAX1617A temperature chamber, board along dotted line attach wires between five terminals along break. Thus, MAX1617A heated cooled without parallel cable interface chamber.
Simple SMBus Commands
There methods communicating with MAX1617A: normal user-interface panel, simple SMBus commands available from SMBus pulldown menu. stop normal user-interface execution that does override manually values, turn update timer that slaves program conversion rate clicking Automatically Update Displays button.
