MAX4550 fully assembled tested. Follow these steps verify board operation. Install MAX4550 software your computer running INSTALL.EXE floppy disk. This copies MAX4550 files creates icon program. Check jumper settings board. Refer Table

MAX4550 Evaluation Evaluates: MAX4550/MAX4570
Connect +4.75V +5.25V supply voltage between DGND pad. dualsupply operation, make sure that JU15 open; connect dual-supply voltages range ±2.7V ±5.25V pads, connect their ground pad. single-supply operation, refer Single-Supply Operation section. Connect 25-pin male-to-female extension cable from computer's parallel port DB25 connector kit. Start MAX4550 program opening icon Windows Start Menu. software selects correct port testing loopback. Apply input signal NO1A connect oscilloscope network analyzer COM1A. Verify switch operation opening closing NO1A-to-COM1A switch software user interface. Checkboxes control status (open closed) each switch.
Evaluating MAX4570
evaluate MAX4570, turn power kit, open JU16 JU17, replace with MAX4570CWI. other hardware changes necessary.

Detailed Description Software
Upon execution MAX4550 program, software determines whether MAX4550 MAX4570 installed. MAX4550 installed, software automatically resolves address MAX4570 installed, this step will performed). software enables command panel, after which user perform operations described below. upper-right corner user interface, along with address MAX4550. MAX4570 installed, software drives low, sends command data bytes, drives high. Note that inverted version DOUT serves input This connection allows software verify that MAX4570 present before issuing command.

Direct Command Entry
user enter command data bytes directly selecting "Cmd Entry" button. window appears containing edit fields corresponding command data bytes. execute command data bytes, enter each byte binary notation) into edit fields select "Execute." When finished, main MAX4550 user-interface window resumes control.
Command Panel
Each four inputs switch matrix plus input, connected either COM1A COM2A both). example, connect NO1A COM1A, check COM1A next NO1A "Switch Matrix panel. same procedure applies switches switch matrix midsupply biasing outputs, check next output "Output Biasing" panel. Make sure JU18 JU19 shunted, connecting BIASH BIASL GND. more details regarding output biasing, refer Output Biasing section MAX4550/MAX4570 data sheet. clickless operation outputs, check next output "Clickless Mode" panel. more details regarding clickless operation, refer MAX4550/MAX4570 data sheet. drive four auxiliary outputs high, check next output "Auxiliary Outputs" panel. Selecting "Reset" button restores MAX4550 power-up state. power-up outputs connected shunt inputs with clickless mode enabled. auxiliary outputs output biasing disabled.
Detailed Description Hardware
Components
MAX4550 dual crosspoint switch array with 2-wire serial interface. R1-R16 termination resistors eight inputs. C1-C4 ACcoupling inputs MAX4550. R32-R35 allow midsupply biasing NO1A NO2A. LEDs (Q0-Q3) connected through four auxiliary outputs MAX4550 through resistors. 74HCT05 (U2), open-drain inverter, implements 2-wire serial interface. logic family ensures that MAX4550 output logic high even when operating 2.7V. RCA-type jacks facilitate audio/video evaluation MAX4550.
Input Termination
eight MAX4550 inputs configured termination. terminate input 10k, jumper connecting termination GND. Refer Table schematic identify correct jumpers.
Serial Communications Interface
When user checks checkbox, MAX4550 software determines command data code bytes corresponding selected function. MAX4550 installed, software issues start condition address byte, after which MAX4550 issues acknowledge pulse. software then sends command data bytes, each followed acknowledge pulse from MAX4550. software completes transfer issuing stop condition. command data bytes generated will displayed
AC-Coupled Inputs
four switch matrix inputs configured AC-coupling input signals. AC-couple input, jumper shunting 2.2µF input capacitor. Refer Table schematic identify correct jumpers. termination also selected AC-coupled input, 2.2µF capacitor resistor will form highpass network with cutoff frequency 7Hz, enough pass frequencies audio band.

Improving Off-Isolation
inputs used improve off-isolation. Suppose COM1A must remain while other outputs being driven. improve off-isolation COM1A, connect with select checkbox close switch between COM1A. Note that COM1A output biasing enabled, must positioned connect 0.1µF capacitor. Refer Table identify correct jumper positions. more information regarding output biasing, refer Output Biasing section MAX4550 data sheet.
Input Biasing
Note that MAX4550 does include internal midsupply biasing option inputs. MAX4550 includes optional midsupply biasing NO1A NO2A inputs. bias NO1A midsupply, first traces connecting pins jumpers JU3. termination midsupply, connect pins jumper JU1; termination midsupply, connect pins jumper JU3. Midsupply biasing NO2A controlled with jumpers JU20 JU21 similar manner.
Measuring Supply Current
measuring quiescent current MAX4550, sure account resistor voltage dividers formed R32-R35. Collectively, these resistors amount path from GND. addition, note that each draws about state.
Single-Supply Operation
single-supply operation, shunt JU15; this will short GND. Connect power-supply voltage between +2.7V +5.25V pads.
Address Selection (MAX4550 only)
specify selectable bits address byte, place jumpers JU16 JU17 positions corresponding desired address. Refer Table more information regarding configuration JU16 JU17.
Layout Considerations
MAX4550 layout optimized high-speed signals crosstalk, with careful attention given signal-path layout. Capacitance between input traces been minimized routing these traces apart from each other possible.
Output Biasing
MAX4550 internal bias network which four outputs connected. ensure that output connected bias network will biased midway between GND, shunt JU18 JU19. alternate bias voltages, remove JU18 JU19 apply bias voltages BIASH BIASL pads.
