General Description
AP1084 dropout positive adjustable fixedmode regulator with minimum 5.0A output current capability. product specifically designed provide well-regulated supply voltage applications such high-speed termination current 3.3V logic supply. AP1084 also well suited other applications such cards. AP1084 guaranteed have lower than 1.4V dropout full load current making ideal provide well-regulated outputs 1.25 3.3V with input supply.

NAME (GND) FUNCTION Adjustable (Ground only fixed mode) output regulator. minimum 10uF capacitor must connected from this ground insure stability. input regulator. Note thermal regulation specifications changes output voltage heating effects. Line load regulation measured constant junction temperature duty cycle pulse testing. Load regulation measured output lead 1/18" from package. Note 2:Line load regulation guaranteed maximum power dissipation 15W. Functional Description
Introduction AP1084 adjustable Dropout (LDO) regulator terminal device that easily programmed with addition external resistors voltages within range 1.25 AP1084 only needs 1.4V differential between Vout maintain output regulation. addition, output voltage tolerances also extremely tight they include transient response part specification. example, Intel specification calls total 100mV including initial tolerance, load regulation 5.0A load step. AP1084 specifically designed meet fast current transient needs well providing accurate initial voltage, reducing overall system cost with need fewer output capacitors. Output Voltage Setting AP1084 programmed voltages range 1.25V with addition external resistors according following formula:

AP1084 keeps constant 1.25V between output adjust pin. placing resistor across these pins constant current flows through adding Iadj current into resistor producing voltage equal (1.25/R1)*R2+Iadj*R2 which will added 1.25V output voltage. This summarized above equation. Since minimum load current requirement AP1084 10mA, typically selected resistor that automatically satisfies minimum current requirement. Notice that since Iadj typically range 55uA only adds small error output voltage should only considered when very precise output voltage setting required. example, typical 3.3V application where R1=121 R2=200 error Iadj only 0.3% nominal point.

Load Regulation Since AP1084 only terminal device, possible provide true remote sensing output voltage load. best load regulation achieved when bottom side connected load top-side resistor connected directly case Vout regulator load. important note that high current applications, this re-present significant percentage overall load regulation must keep path from regulator load short possible minimize this effect. Stability AP1084 requires output capacitor part frequency compensation order make regulator stable. most applications minimum 10uF aluminum electrolytic capacitor insures both stability good transient response. Thermal Design AP1084 incorporates internal thermal shutdown that protects device when junction temperature exceeds maximum allowable junction temperature. Although this device operate with junction temperatures range 150oC, recommended that selected heat sink chosen such that during maximum continuous load operation junction temperature kept below temperature. Layout Consideration output capacitors must located close Vout terminal device possible. recommended section layer board plane connect Vout output capacitors prevent high frequency oscillation that result excessive trace inductance.
