Measurement WLAN Receiver Sensitivity
Author: Richard Abrahams
Summary
This Technical Brief presents practical step-by-step method measuring sensitivity Intersil PRISM® PCMCIA Wireless assembly.
40dB, Precision Attenuator, DC-6GHz, with connectors. 20dB, Precision Attenuator, DC-6GHz. (optional) Spectrum Analyzer, 8593E equivalent. Torque Wrench connectors, lb-in., 1582 equivalent. Various lengths loss coax cable terminated male connectors. LANEVAL software (proprietary Intersil Windows-based software which generates transmitter packets displays receiver Packet Error Rate). Prism Test Utility (PTU) software (proprietary Intersil Windows-based software which provides convenient Continuous Transmit mode enabling accurate power measurement).
Equipment Required
Reference PRISM PCMCIA WLAN transmitter (used DSSS source) Shielded Boxes with Beryllium Copper Finger Stock lid, required: enclose Controller Transmitter enclose Controller Receiver. Laptop Computers required. Wattmeter with sensitive sensor head, 438A with 8484A sensor equivalent (-70 +20dBm power range) Variable Attenuator, 60dB, Weinschel 940-60-11 equivalent. 2-Way Precision 6dB, Power Splitter, 11667B equivalent required, optional (see Test Setup). 6dB, Precision Attenuator, DC-6GHz, with connectors.
Test Procedure
NOTE: procedure below, assumed that proper Windows Driver, LANEVAL software correctly installed operational. proprietary software normally supplied with purchase EVAL kit.

Technical Brief
Connect equipment shown Test Setup below using loss coax cables. Torque Wrench ensure that coaxial cable connections adequately torqued provide good shielding. over torque damage connectors occur. Ensure that Wattmeter recently been zeroed that correct Calibration Constants have been entered. Transmitter Controller Laptop, note that NDIS driver icon appears System Tray desktop (looks like computer with antenna sticking top). Double click this icon note that Wireless Configuration Utility opens. Left click Configuration select either AdHoc Pseudo IBSS mode (depending driver version). Select Channel Data Rate. Click Apply note that NDIS icon color green. Using LANEVAL software Transmit Controller laptop, turn transmitter left-clicking mouse Start button. Note that Transmit Data window opens. Click Start button. this window. transmitter will start data transmission will begin. Allow transmitter warm minutes stabilize power output. Place cover over transmitter shielded such that unit completely covered sides. weight center cover ensure adequate pressure sealing cover Finger Stock. Variable Attenuator minimum attenuation [i.e., fully clockwise (CW)]. Receiver Controller laptop, repeat step Receiver Controller laptop, start LANEVAL software. opening menu, left click Start Note that Receive Data window opens. this menu, left click Start Note that displays Current column indicating data. Percent Packet Error Rate (PER%) should indicate very close (i.e., perfect packet transfers).
NOTE: data received, check Network area Control Panel both Transmitter Receiver ensure that address Subnet Mask have been assigned associated TCP/IP component. Address must different Transmitter Receiver. Subnet Mask must same. recommended Subnet. access this area, Desktop select Start Settings Control Panel. Then double click Network.
Place cover Receiver. Close much opening possible, leaving only just enough Laptop exposed enable reading screen. Alternately, convenience, connect remote monitor remote keyboard Laptop thereby permitting Receiver completely shielded. this case, prudent place Ferrite Decoupling Sleeves around each connecting cables these devices prevent signals from propagating through this path. Locate these sleeves inside near where cables exit box. Slowly increase attenuation rotating Variable Attenuator counterclockwise (CCW) until increases approximately NOTE: Because sophisticated correlator used PRISM, normally degrades extremely rapidly, once sensitivity threshold reached. therefore usually possible achieve exactly PER. Rather, average around this value. Turn Transmitter clicking Stop button. Start software double clicking icon Desktop. Select proper associated driver from list appearing screen. After short delay, Address Baseband Processor type should appear. sure correct driver, click PCMCIA icon System Tray Desktop note name displayed. Note that button operating channel colored green. Click this channel note that border appears around button. Click Continuous button note that color turns red. Transmitter operating with packet gaps, enabling accurate reading power. Note: will receive packets while Continuous Transmit mode. Note Wattmeter reading. Receiver Sensitivity easily calculated subtracting 40dB from this power reading. Example: Wattmeter indicates -43dBm, Receiver Sensitivity -83dBm. Turn Transmitter clicking Continuous button. color should revert back grey.
