Application Hints
GAIN CONTROL make LM386 more versatile amplifier, pins provided gain control. With pins open 1.35 resistor sets gain dB). capacitor from bypassing 1.35 resistor, gain will dB). resistor placed series with capacitor, gain value from 200. Gain control also done capacitively coupling resistor FET) from ground. Additional external components placed parallel with internal feedback resistors tailor gain frequency response individual applications. example, compensate poor speaker bass response frequency shaping feedback path. This done with series from (paralleling internal resistor). effective bass boost: lowest value good stable operation open. pins bypassed then used. This restriction because amplifier only compensated closed-loop gains greater than INPUT BIASING schematic shows that both inputs biased ground with resistor. base current input transistors about inputs about 12.5 when left open. source resistance driving LM386 higher than will contribute very little additional offset (about input, output). source resistance less than then shorting unused input ground will keep offset (about input, output). source resistances between these values eliminate excess offset putting resistor from unused input ground, equal value source resistance. course offset problems eliminated input capacitively coupled. When using LM386 with higher gains (bypassing 1.35 resistor between pins necessary bypass unused input, preventing degradation gain possible instabilities. This done with capacitor short ground depending source resistance driven input.
