Recommended Equipment
This section lists recommended test equipment verify operation MAX2170. intended guide only, some substitutions possible: signal generator capable delivering least +5dBm output power operating frequency (HPE4433B equivalent) spectrum analyzer that covers MAX2170 operating-frequency range (e.g., FSEB20) power supply capable +2.7V +6.0V ammeter measuring supply current (optional) cables cables network analyzer (e.g., 8753D) measure small-signal return loss (optional) Connect signal generator either VHFIII, L-BAND input through connectors respectively. turn generator's output. Connect baseband output spectrum analyzer through cable. Connect board through parallel cable. Turn supply. supply current should read approximately 70mA. control software IBM-compatible Using control software, configure following: Select desired band operation channel through Block section software's graphical interface. Based frequency, software automatically sets appropriate tracking-filter settings VHF/FM mode. power-detector threshold factory-calibrated typical input power -52dBm. Procedure
Measurement Considerations MAX2170 includes on-board buffer that converts baseband differential outputs singleended output (see Figure details). buffer configured gain one. output buffer consists resistor series matching test equipment. Note that there loss output test equipment used. This loss must accounted when measuring gain. Connections Setup MAX2170 fully assembled tested. Caution: turn power signal generators until connections made: Connect supply +3.0V (through ammeter desired) terminals kit. turn supply. Note that VCC2 board shorted together through JP3.
Connect supply +2.4V (maximum gain) RFAGC terminal kit. turn supply. Connect supply +2.4V (maximum gain) BBAGC terminal kit. turn supply.

Layout Issues
good essential part circuit design. serves guide laying board using MAX2170. Keep traces carrying signals short possible minimize radiation insertion loss. impedance control signal traces. exposed paddle must soldered evenly board's ground plane proper operation. abundant vias beneath exposed paddle between traces minimize undesired coupling. minimize coupling between different sections each must have bypass capacitor with impedance closest ground frequency interest. share ground vias among multiple connections ground plane. Refer Layout section MAX2170 data sheet more information.
Gain Control
baseband circuits MAX2170 controlled independently through jumpers JP10 JP4, respectively. Connecting pins JP10 closes gain control loop. MAX2170 also implements control loop baseband through shorting pins JP4. HOLD_AGC controls MAX4729 analog switch (see Figure schematic details). typical applications, demodulator controls baseband VGA. analog switch external circuitry (Q1, optional components only needed when demodulator lacks baseband control circuit.
