Application Hints
OPERATION DESCRIPTION LP5996 quiescent current, power management designed specifically portable applications requiring minimum board space smallest components. LP5996 contains independently selectable LDOs. first capable sourcing 150mA outputs between 0.8V 3.3V. second source 300mA output voltage 0.8V 3.3V. INPUT CAPACITOR input capacitor required stability. recommended that 1.0µF capacitor connected between LP5996 input ground (this capacitance value increased without limit). This capacitor must located distance more than from input returned clean analogue ground. good quality ceramic, tantalum, film capacitor used input. Important: Tantalum capacitors suffer catastrophic failures surge current when connected lowimpedance source power (like battery very large capacitor). tantalum capacitor used input, must guaranteed manufacturer have surge current rating sufficient application. There requirements (Equivalent Series Resistance) input capacitor, tolerance temperature coefficient must considered when selecting capacitor ensure capacitance will remain approximately 1.0µF over entire operating temperature range. OUTPUT CAPACITOR LP5996 designed specifically work with very small ceramic output capacitors. 1.0µF ceramic capacitor (temperature types Z5U, X7R) with between 500m, suitable LP5996 application circuit. this device output capacitor should connected between VOUT ground. also possible tantalum film capacitors device output, COUT VOUT), these attractive reasons size cost (see section Capacitor Characteristics). output capacitor must meet requirement minimum value capacitance also have value that within range 500m stability. NO-LOAD STABILITY LP5996 will remain stable regulation with external load. This important consideration some circuits, example CMOS keep-alive applications. CAPACITOR CHARACTERISTICS LP5996 designed work with ceramic capacitors output take advantage benefits they offer. capacitance values range 0.47µF 4.7µF, ceramic capacitors smallest, least expensive have lowest values, thus making them best eliminating high frequency noise. typical 1.0µF ceramic capacitor range 40m, which easily meets requirement stability LP5996.
both input output capacitors, careful interpretation capacitor specification required ensure correct device operation. capacitor value change greatly, depending operating conditions capacitor type. particular, output capacitor selection should take account capacitor parameters, ensure that specification within application. capacitance vary with bias conditions well temperature frequency operation. Capacitor values will also show some decrease over time aging. capacitor parameters also dependant particular case size, with smaller sizes giving poorer performance figures general. example, Figure shows typical graph comparing different capacitor case sizes Capacitance Bias plot. shown graph, increasing Bias condition result capacitance value falling below minimum value given recommended capacitor specifications table (0.7µF this case). Note that graph shows capacitance spec 0402 case size capacitor higher bias voltages. therefore recommended that capacitor manufacturers' specifications nominal value capacitor consulted conditions, some capacitor sizes (e.g. 0402) suitable actual application.
20171540
FIGURE Graph Showing Typical Variation Capacitance Bias capacitance value ceramic capacitors varies with temperature. capacitor type X7R, which operates over temperature range -55°C +125°C, will only vary capacitance within 15%. capacitor type similar tolerance over reduced temperature range -55°C +85°C. Many large value ceramic capacitors, larger than manufactured with temperature characteristics. Their capacitance drop more than temperature varies from 25°C 85°C. Therefore recommended over applications where ambient temperature will change significantly above below 25°C. Tantalum capacitors less desirable than ceramic output capacitors because they more expensive when comparing equivalent capacitance voltage ratings 0.47µF 4.7µF range. Another important consideration that tantalum capacitors have higher values than equivalent size ceramics. This means that while possible find tantalum

capacitor with value within stable range, would have larger capacitance (which means bigger more costly) than ceramic capacitor with same value. should also noted that typical tantalum will increase about temperature goes from 25°C down -40°C, some guard band must allowed. ENABLE CONTROL LP5996 features active high enable pins each regulator, EN2, which turns corresponding when pulled low. device outputs enabled when enable pins high. When enabled regulator output device typically consumes 2nA. application does require Enable switching feature, both enable pins should tied keep regulator output permanently ensure proper operation, signal source used drive enable inputs must able swing above below specified turn-on/off voltage thresholds listed Electrical Characteristics section under VIH. BYPASS CAPACITOR internal voltage reference circuit LP5996 connected CBYP high value internal resistor. external capacitor, connected this pin, forms low-pass
filter which reduces noise level both outputs device. There also some improvement PSSR line transient performance. Internal circuitry ensures rapid charging CBYP capacitor during start-up. 10nF, high quality ceramic capacitor with either dielectric recommended their leakage characteristics noise performance. SAFE AREA OPERATION consideration should given operating conditions avoid excessive thermal dissipation LP5996 triggering thermal shutdown circuit. When both outputs enabled, total power dissipation will PD(LDO1) PD(LDO2) where (VIN VOUT) IOUT each general, device options which have large difference output voltage will dissipate more power with both outputs enabled, input voltage required higher output voltage LDO. such cases, especially elevated ambient temperature, possible operate both outputs maximum current same time.
