General Description
MAX2642/MAX2643 low-cost, high third-order intercept point (IP3), low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) designed applications cellular, ISM, SMR, systems. They feature programmable bias, allowing supply current optimized specific applications. These LNAs provide 0dBm input while maintaining noise figure 1.3dB. gain these devices typically 17dB. MAX2642 also features 13dB attenuation step, which extends LNA's dynamic range. Both devices feature shutdown mode that minimizes power consumption. On-chip output matching saves board space reducing number external components. MAX2642/MAX2643 designed low-noise, advanced silicon-germanium (SiGe) process technology. They operate from +2.7V +5.5V single supply available ultra-small 6-pin SC70 package.

Description
NAME BIAS RFIN RFOUT FUNCTION Resistor Bias Control. Connect resistor, RBIAS, from BIAS ground. RBIAS sets supply current (see Applications Information). current through this approximately 50mV divided RBIAS. Ground. optimum performance, provide low-inductance connection ground plane. Amplifier Input. AC-couple this with DC-blocking capacitor. External matching network required optimum performance. Supply Voltage. Bypass with 47pF capacitor directly ground supply pin. Additional bypassing necessary long lines. Amplifier Output. Internally matched bias this selects gain mode (MAX2642) shutdown mode (MAX2643) (see Applications Information).
Applications Information
Input Matching
Input matching required optimum performance. MAX2642/MAX2643 require simple matching network, shown Typical Operating Circuit. further reduce cost external component count, replace external inductor with microstrip transmission line. Typical Operating Circuit shows recommended input-matching networks MAX2642/ MAX2643 900MHz. These values optimized best simultaneous gain, noise figure, return-loss performance. design matching network other frequencies, Tables list typical device S-parameters various biases, Tables list typical device noise parameters.
Shutdown
MAX2643, recommended shutdown method voltage RFOUT manner similar MAX2642's attenuation step. That when voltage RFOUT below +0.6V, device shut down; voltage greater than +2.0V, device enabled. MAX2642, shutdown achieved leaving BIAS unconnected. Figure shows suggested shutdown methods. Avoid capacitance BIAS connecting bias resistor from BIAS switch. Table summarizes operational modes.
Layout Issues
properly designed board essential RF/microwave circuit. controlled impedance lines high-frequency inputs outputs. Bypass with decoupling capacitors located close device pin. long lines, necessary additional decoupling capacitors. These additional capacitors located farther away from device package. Proper grounding pins essential. board uses topside ground, connect directly pins. board where ground plane component layer, best technique connect pins board with plated through-hole located close package.
