GENERAL INFORMATION
ADM222/ADM232A/ADM242 high-speed RS-232 drivers/receivers requiring single digital supply. RS-232 standard requires transmitters that will deliver minimum transmission channel receivers that accept signal levels down parts achieve this integrating stepup voltage converters level-shifting transmitters receivers onto same chip. CMOS technology used keep power dissipation absolute minimum. devices contain internal charge pump voltage doubler voltage inverter that generates from input. Four external capacitors required internal charge pump voltage converter. ADM222/ADM232A/ADM242 modification, enhancement improvement AD230-AD241 family derivatives thereof. essentially plug-in-compatible does have materially different applications.
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
input threshold levels both TTL- CMOS-compatible with switching threshold VCC/4. With nominal switching threshold 1.25 typical. Unused inputs left unconnected, internal pull-up resistor pulls them high forcing outputs into state. required RS-232 standard, slew rate limited less than V/µs without need external slew limiting capacitor, output impedance power-off state greater than
Receiver Section
internal circuitry consists four main sections. These are: Charge Pump Voltage Converter TTL/CMOS RS-232 Transmitters RS-232 TTL/CMOS Receivers Enable Shutdown Functions.
Charge Pump DC-DC Voltage Converter
receivers inverting level-shifters that accept RS-232 input levels translate them into TTL/ CMOS levels. inputs have internal pull-down resistors ground also protected against overvoltages guaranteed switching thresholds minimum maximum, which well within RS-232 requirement. level threshold deliberately positive ensures that unconnected input will interpreted level. receivers have Schmitt trigger input with hysteresis level This ensures error-free reception both noisy inputs inputs with slow transition times
Enable Shutdown Functions
Charge Pump Voltage converter consists oscillator switching matrix. converter generates supply from input level. This done stages using switched capacitor technique. input supply doubled using capacitor charge storage element. level also generated from input supply using storage elements. Capacitors used reduce output ripple. Their values critical reduced higher levels ripple acceptable. charge pump capacitors also reduced expense higher output impedance supplies. supplies also used power external circuitry current requirements small. Please refer typical performance characteristics which shows output voltage current. shutdown mode charge pump disabled decays while decays
Transmitter (Driver) Section
ADM222, both receivers fully disabled during shutdown. ADM242, both receivers continue operate normally. This function useful monitoring activity that when occurs, device taken shutdown mode. ADM242 also contains receiver enable function (EN) which used fully disable receivers, independent SHDN.
APPLICATIONS INFORMATION
selection typical operating circuits shown TPCs Figure
2.0V
Drivers convert TTL/CMOS input levels into RS-232 output levels. With driving typical RS-232 load, output voltage swing Even under worst-case conditions drivers guaranteed meet RS-232 minimum requirement.
