12V, Ultra-Low Low-Dropout Linear Regulators
MAX1725/MAX1726 ultra-low supply current, low-dropout linear regulators intended low-power applications that demand longest possible battery life. Unlike inferior PNP-based designs, MAX1725/ MAX1726s' PMOS pass elements maintain ultra-low supply current throughout their entire operating range dropout. Despite their ultra-low power consumption, MAX1725/MAX1726 have tight output accuracy (1.5%) require just output capacitance achieve good load-transient response. These regulators have wide input voltage range (+2.5V +12V), making them excellent choices systems powered from lithium-ion (Li+) cells batteries. Other features include reverse-battery protection, short-circuit protection, thermal protection. MAX1725 provides adjustable 1.5V output using external resistor-divider. MAX1726 provides factory preset 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, output voltages (see Ordering Information). Both devices available tiny 5-pin SOT23 package. Detailed Description
MAX1725/MAX1726 low-dropout, low-quiescentcurrent linear regulators designed primarily batterypowered applications (Figure MAX1725 provides adjustable output voltage from 1.5V using external resistor-divider. MAX1726 supplies preset output voltages 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, These devices consist +1.245V error amplifier, MOSFET driver, P-channel pass transistor (Figure

error amplifier compares 1.245V selected feedback voltage amplifies difference. feedback voltage lower than 1.245V, pass-transistor gate pulled lower, allowing more current pass, thus increasing output voltage. feedback voltage higher than 1.245V, pass-transistor gate driven higher, allowing less current pass output. output voltage back through either internal resistor voltage-divider connected (MAX1726) external resistor network connected (MAX1725). Additional features include output current limiter, reverse-battery protection, thermal sensor, shutdown logic.

Internal P-Channel Pass Transistor
MAX1725/MAX1726 feature P-channel MOSFET pass transistor. This provides advantages over similar designs using pass transistors, including longer battery life. P-channel MOSFET requires base drive, which reduces quiescent current considerably. PNP-based regulators waste considerable current dropout when pass transistor saturates; they also high base-drive currents under large loads. MAX1725/MAX1726 suffer from these problems, consume only quiescent current throughout their load range (see Typical Operating Characteristics).

pass transistor shuts off, output falls ground, supply current drops from 0.7µA. Connect SHDN normal operation. reverse-battery protection needed, drive SHDN through 100k resistor. MAX1725 features adjustable output voltage from 1.5V using external resistors connected voltage-divider (Figure MAX1725 optimized operation with 1.2M. output voltage following equation: VOUT where typically 1.245V. simplify resistor selection: Choose 1.2M best accuracy.
Thermal-Overload Protection
Thermal-overload protection limits total power dissipation MAX1725/MAX1726. When junction temperature exceeds +150°C, thermal sensor signals shutdown logic, turning pass transistor allowing cool. thermal sensor turns pass transistor again after IC's junction temperature cools 15°C, resulting pulsed output during continuous thermal-overload conditions. Thermal-overload protection designed protect devices event fault conditions. continuous operation, exceed absolute maximum junction temperature rating +150°C.
Foldback Current Limiting
MAX1725/MAX1726 also include foldback current limiter. When output shorted ground, output PMOS drive limited that output current does exceed 40mA (typ). output shorted ground indefinitely without damaging part.
Power-Supply Rejection Operation from Sources Other than Batteries
MAX1725/MAX1726 designed deliver dropout voltages quiescent currents batterypowered systems. Power-supply rejection 60dB frequencies rolls above 100Hz. high frequencies, output capacitor major contributor rejection power-supply noise (see Power-Supply Rejection Ratio Frequency graph Typical Operating Characteristics). When operating from sources other than batteries, improve supply-noise rejection transient response increasing value input output capacitors, using passive filtering techniques (see Supply Load Transient Response graph Typical Operating Characteristics).
Reverse-Battery Protection
MAX1725/MAX1726 have unique protection scheme that limits reverse supply current less than 10µA when forced below ground. circuitry monitors polarity input, disconnecting internal circuitry parasitic diodes when battery reversed. This feature prevents device, battery, load from overheating electrical stress. reverse-battery protection, drive SHDN through 100k resistor.
