Fault Queue (MAX6634/MAX6635)
programmable fault queue MAX6634/ MAX6635 eliminates spurious alarm activity noisy environments. queue sets number consecutive out-of-tolerance temperature readings that must occur before ALERT OVERT alarm outputs toggled. out-of-tolerance reading above THIGH TMAX below TLOW. fault queue depth defaults power-up programmed-through Configuration register-to four consecutive conversions. time conversion result tolerance, particular alarm output asserted, queue cleared, even contains some out-of-tolerance counts. Additionally, fault queue automatically clears power-up shutdown. Whenever fault queue cleared, alarm outputs deasserted. Figure alarm output reset diagram.
Temperature Conversion
on-chip bandgap reference produces signal proportional absolute temperature (PTAT), well temperature-stable reference voltage necessary analog-to-digital conversion. PTAT signal digitized on-board resolution 0.0625°C. resulting digital value placed Temperature register. temperature conversion runs continuously asynchronously from serial interface rate 500ms conversion. When Temperature register read, conversion progress aborted. transaction completed stop condition.

Temperature Alert (MAX6634/MAX6635)
ALERT programmable polarity modes: comparator interrupt. Polarity mode selected through Configuration register (Table ALERT output open drain. Interrupt Mode With ALERT interrupt mode, MAX6634/MAX6635 look THIGH TLOW fault. ALERT asserts alarm undertemperature fault, well overtemperature fault. Once either fault occurred, remains active until deasserted read register. device then begins look temperature change crossing hysteresis level. activation ALERT subject depth fault queue. example: THIGH 100°C, THYST 20°C, fault queue depth ALERT does assert until four consecutive conversions exceed 100°C. temperature then read through I2C-compatible interface, ALERT deasserts. ALERT asserts again when four consecutive conversions less than 80°C. Comparator Mode comparator mode, ALERT asserted when number consecutive conversions exceeding value THIGH register, lower than value TLOW register, equal depth fault queue. ALERT deasserts when number consecutive conversions
less than THIGH THYST greater than TLOW THYST equal depth fault queue. example: THIGH 100°C, TLOW 80°C, fault queue depth four, ALERT does assert until four consecutive conversions exceed 100°C, below 80°C. ALERT only deasserts four consecutive conversions less than THIGH THYST greater than TLOW THYST. Comparator mode allows autonomous clearing ALERT fault without intervention master ideal driving thermostat (Figure 10).
Overtemperature Alarm (MAX6635)
MAX6635 also includes overtemperature output that always comparator mode. Whenever temperature exceeds value programmable TMAX register, OVERT asserted. OVERT only deasserts after temperature drops below TMAX THYST. When fault queue activated, OVERT subject that queue, which sets number faults that must occur before OVERT asserts deasserts. This helps prevent spurious alarms noisy environments. Comparator mode also allows autonomous clearing OVERT fault without intervention master thus ideal driving cooling (Figure 11). this application, polarity OVERT active high.
Shutdown
MAX6633/MAX6634/MAX6635 feature shutdown mode, accessible through serial interface that saves power turning everything except

While shutdown, Temperature register retains last conversion result read time. turned off, reducing device current draw 30µA (max). outputs ALERT OVERT latched upon entering shutdown, fault queue held reset. After coming shutdown, Temperature register continues read last converted temperature, until next conversion result available.

Thermal Considerations
MAX6633/MAX6634/MAX6635 supply current typically 200µA when serial interface inactive. When used drive high-impedance loads, devices dissipate negligible power; therefore, temperature essentially same package temperature. accurate temperature monitoring good thermal contact between MAX6633/MAX6634/ MAX6635 package monitored device circuit. Heat flows plastic packages primarily through leads. Short, wide copper traces leading temperature monitor ensure that heat transfers quickly reliably. rise temperature self-heating given following formula: PDISSIPATION where DISSIPATION power dissipated MAX6633/MAX6634/MAX6635, package's thermal resistance. typical thermal resistance 170°C/W 8-pin package. limit effects self-heating, minimize output currents. example, MAX6634/MAX6635 sink with maximum ALERT specification 0.8V, additional 3.2mW power dissipated within This corresponds 0.54°C rise temperature.
