Electret Condenser Microphone Cartridge Preamplifier
MAX9810 microphone preamplifier intended inside electret condenser microphone (ECM) cartridges. Current solutions impedance converter. FETs have limited gain, susceptible noise require additional components external cartridge biasing amplification. MAX9810 replaces with high-gain, high-noise rejection, low-output-impedance amplifier. Designed integrated inside cartridge, MAX9810 offers flat frequency response, tightly controlled gain, increased sensitivity, high-noise rejection greatly simplifying system design. Target applications include cartridges cell phones, PDAs, notebooks, other portable audio devices. MAX9810 operates from single 2.3V 5.5V supply consumes only 670µA quiescent current. device features internally generated 1.5V bias, available three internally fixed gain options (24dB, 27dB, 30dB). MAX9810 specified over extended temperature range (-40°C +85°C) comes tiny 4-bump chip-scale package (UCSPTM) that designed inside cartridge.

Noise Rejection
MAX9810 features excellent rejection common cellular-phone operating frequencies. Figure shows modulation products high-frequency signal coupling into device power supply, while device driven with 1kHz input. 1GHz, MAX9810 exhibits 82dB rejection.

Detailed Description
MAX9810 replaces commonly used ECMs with high-gain, low-noise, low-output-impedance amplifier, offering improved performance over traditional solution. MAX9810 features high PSRR (82dB 1kHz), available three gain options (24dB, 27dB, 30dB). ECMs with impedance converters require additional amplification (Figure high gain MAX9810 eliminates need external preamplifier, allowing cartridge directly connected front-end devices such CODECs ADCs (Figure MAX9810 also features excellent immunity (see Noise Rejection section).
Supply Bypassing
Unlike FETs, MAX9810 requires separate power source (Figures must connected 2.3V 5.5V power supply external cartridge, thus MAX9810 solution requires three electrical connections instead commonly found current solutions. optimum performance, bypass MAX9810 close device possible (inside cartridge). This yields best rejection PSRR ideal applications such cell phones where high-frequency noise present. device operates properly bypass capacitor placed circuit board outside cartridge; however, rejection slightly degraded this configuration (Figure This well suited applications where there less high-frequency interference such PDAs notebook computers.
Rail-to-Rail Output
When operated from supply, internal 1.5V bias point provides symmetrical, rail-to-rail operation where output swing within 15mV either rail into load. 1.5V bias point independent supply, when operated from supplies other than MAX9810 output headroom supplies (Figure This limits peak-to-peak output approximately: VOUT(P-P) VOUT(P-P) MAX9810 shows phase reversal when device overdriven. device output driven into clipping, overload behavior predictable.
