APPLICATIONS INFORMATION Introduction LP2950/LP2951 regulators designed with internal current limiting thermal shutdown making them user-friendly. Typical application circuits LP2950 LP2951 shown Figures through These regulators internally compensated thus require greater) capacitance between LP2950/LP2951 output terminal ground stability. Most types aluminum, tantalum multilayer ceramic will perform adequately. Solid tantalums appropriate multilayer ceramic capacitors recommended operation below 25°C. lower values output current, less output capacitance required output stability. capacitor reduced 0.33 currents less than currents below Using 8-pin versions voltages less than operates error amplifier lower values gain, that more output capacitance needed stability. worst case operating condition load 1.23 output (Output connected feedback minimum capacitance recommended. LP2950 will remain stable regulation when operated with output load. When setting output voltage LP2951 with external resistors, resistance values should chosen draw minimum bypass capacitor recommended across LP2950/LP2951 input ground more than inches wire connects input either battery power supply filter capacitor. Input capacitance LP2951 Feedback create pole, causing instability high value external resistors used output voltage. Adding capacitor between Output Feedback increasing output filter capacitor least will stabilize feedback loop. Error Detection Comparator comparator switches positive logic whenever LP2951 output voltage falls more than approximately 5.0% regulation. This trip level remains 5.0% below normal regardless value regulated output voltage. example, error flag trip level 4.75 normal regulated output, 9.50 output voltage. Figure timing diagram which shows ERROR signal regulated output voltage input voltage LP2951 ramped down. ERROR signal becomes valid (low) about input. goes high when input reaches about (Vout exceeds about 4.75 Since LP2951's dropout voltage dependent upon load current (refer curve Typical Performance Characteristics), input voltage trip point will vary with load current. output voltage trip point does vary with load. error comparator output open collector which requires external pull-up resistor. This resistor returned output some other voltage within system. resistance value should chosen consistent with sink capability error comparator. value between suggested. pull-up resistance required this output unused.
