Installation
3.1. Connecting Apex-ICE

Important! Apex-ICE, Analog Devices JTAG Family DSPs emulator contains (electrostatic discharge) sensitive devices. Electrostatic charges readily accumulate human body equipment discharge without detection. Permanent damage occur devices subjected high-energy discharges. Proper precautions recommended avoid performance degradation loss functionality.
3.1.1. Note: Proper Power-On Sequence
Attach probe un-powered target using 14-pin header. (Never connect powered Apex-ICE powered target board.) Apply power Apex-ICE Apply power target board. Invoke debugger software.
3.1.2. General Operating Instructions
Connect power supply wall outlet. Connect other power supply connector Apex-ICE unit. Connect Apex-ICE connector full speed port your ApexICE connected powered Apex-ICE status will flash when Apex-ICE emulator ready connection from either ApexControl VisualDSP. NOTE: status will flash approximately seconds after power applied cable connected

3.2. Windows Installation
Apex-ICE requires full speed port. Configuration board performed automatically boot insertion plug-n-play hardware support. Prior using your Apex-ICE first time Windows Driver must first installed. This accomplished follows:
Follow section connecting Apex-ICE Insert CD-ROM labeled "Emulator Drivers into CD-ROM drive. VisualDSP++ Emulator Tools Installation splash screen displayed click Exit. connection device port will activate Window "Add Hardware Wizard shown figure Click Next.

Insert CD-ROM labeled "Emulator Drivers into CD-ROM drive click next. Windows will then automatically detect install Apex-ICE driver from disk shown figure Click Next.

Click "Start" button. Select "Settings" then "Control Panel." Double click "System" icon. Select "Hardware" tab. Select "Device Manager" tab. Double click "DSP Emulators". window similar that shown figure should displayed.

Double click "Apex-ICE Emulator". This will display Apex-ICE Properties page shown figure status Apex-ICE will shown window. device status should report that device working properly. Note: Status should blinking.

3.3. Windows 2000 Installation

Hardware Wizard will locate install correct driver disk. This will complete driver installation. will window similar that figure Click Finish.

3.4. Configuring Apex-ICE
Note: This section optional. This procedure used reduce noise related issue. Apex-ICE contains internal jumpers reducing noise issues associated with JTAG signals. These jumpers accessible removing four screws bottom plastic enclosure removing enclosure. jumpers shown figure

There jumpers provided help reduce problems that arise because ringing reflections JTAG signals target board. These jumpers installed when shipped from factory. Jumpers used adding parallel terminator CLKIN signals. When jumpers installed parallel terminator connected CLKIN signals. Figure shows terminators connected JTAG signals. important note that target MUST able drive load before these jumpers installed. cannot drive this load directly, driver should inserted between JTAG signals JTAG signals header.

3.5. Connecting Your Target System
connects target processor through JTAG interface. target board must built with appropriate JTAG connector. Please note position pin. should used guide connect target. Included with Apex-ICE system extender connectors. These extenders used connect Apex-ICE system target, which designed with ICEPACTM. These extenders allow connection JTAG pins ICEPAC header. more information designing JTAG interface refer EE-68.
3.6. Removing Apex-ICE device from Windows 2000
From Windows task double-click Unplug Eject Hardware icon. window similar that shown figure should displayed.

ApexControl Software
ApexControl utility used download firmware updates, reboot Apex-ICE IceTest utility. following sections describe each ApexControl functions. This manual assumes ApexControl application used with VisualDSP software. ApexControl provided other third party vendors, user should refer vendor's documentation.
4.1. Install Apex-ICE Software
Refer VisualDSP Emulation Tools Installation Guide provided Emulator Drivers Section Installation.
4.2. Target Type Selection
Before VisualDSP software used with Apex-ICE target type must selected. Apex-ICE installation software will insert proper target type into target type pull down list. ApexControl software isn't currently running, start from Windows start button, Figure shows initial dialog.
Click Target Type pull down list (see figure select appropriate target type.

selected target type will available after Connect Reboot actions taken described following sections.
4.3. Apex Connection
Before Apex-ICE utilities used, connection device must established.
Confirm Apex-ICE device turned operating properly described Chapter Note: status should blinking green power illuminated. Select Apex-ICE Device drop down list should contain least configured device. not, follow instructions section 4.1. Select desired device from Select Apex-ICE Device drop down list. circle left device selection indicates that device currently connected. Click Connect button. figure connection successful then green circle will appear next device selection Download, Reboot IceTest buttons will become active. figure Note! error message appears then Apex-ICE device either configured correctly, turned malfunctioning. Review previous sections correct configuration.

4.4. Apex-ICE Firmware Download
Occasionally Apex-ICE firmware updates necessary. Analog Devices other qualified thirdInitially Apex-ICE device doesn't have target specific software loaded. user must perform one-time software download Apex-ICE device. Review section details downloading files Apex-ICE device. Occasionally software updates necessary. Please refer Emulator's Readme file located /VisualDSP/Help folder additional information. Note: firmware download needed Section IceTest Utility.
Important! Only software updates from Analog Devices qualified third party companies should downloaded Apex-ICE Device. Downloading other software Apex-ICE device cause device stop functioning.
Verify Apex-ICE device configured powered ApexControl utility select desired remote device target type. section 4.2. Click Connect button establish connection Apex-ICE device. Click Download button. File Select dialog will displayed figure

4.5. Apex Reboot
ApexControl utility used reboot Apex-ICE emulator.
Confirm Apex-ICE device turned operating properly described Chapter ApexControl software isn't currently running, start from Windows Start button, Figure shows initial dialog. Confirm Apex-ICE device configured connected described sections 4.3. Click Reboot Apex button. confirmation dialog will appear. Click reboot Apex device. Apex status will flash when Apex emulator ready connection from either ApexControl VisualDSP.
NOTE: status will stop flashing when ApexControl VisualDSP currently connected Apex emulator.
4.6. IceTest Utility
IceTest utility used verify test target JTAG connection.
ApexControl software isn't currently running, start from Windows Start button, Confirm Apex-ICE device configured connected described sections 4.3.

Confirm target board connected Apex-ICE device. Click IceTest button. IceTest dialog will appear shown figure Click Start button IceTest utility. Continuous scan selected IceTest will until Stop button pressed.

4.7. Create VisualDSP DebugApp Session
This section assumes that user installed VisualDSP application software familiar with use.
Important! Apex-ICE device must installed before proceeding with this section.
Verify Apex-ICE device connected powered IceCfg utility located VisualDSP/System directory target types. VisualDSP Emulation User's Manual more information. Note: Base Address entry isn't required Apex-ICE. Start VisualDSP DebugApp from start menu, StartProgramsVisualDSPDebugger Select Session from menu bar. Then choose Session from list. Under Debug Target pull down list select ADSP-21xxx Apex JTAG Emulator. figure Under Platform choose desired target type connected Apex-ICE device. Click VisualDSP DebugApp ready use.
