Combining low-power CMOS logic with high-current high-voltage bipolar outputs, UCN5804B UCN5804LB BiMOS translator/ drivers provide complete control drive four-phase unipolar steppermotor with continuous output current ratings 1.25 phase (1.5 startup) CMOS logic section provides sequencing logic, DIRECTION OUTPUT ENABLE control, power-on reset function. Three stepper-motor drive formats, wave-drive (one-phase), two-phase, halfstep externally selectable. inputs compatible with standard CMOS, PMOS, NMOS circuits. LSTTL require appropriate pull-up resistors ensure proper input-logic high. wave-drive format consists energizing motor phase time A-B-C-D D-C-B-A) sequence. This excitation mode consumes least power assures positional accuracy regardless winding inbalance motor. Two-phase drive energizes adjacent phases each detent position (AB-BC-CD-DA). This sequence mode offers improved torque-speed product, greater detent torque, less susceptible motor resonance. Half-step excitation alternates between one-phase two-phase modes (A-AB-B-BC-C-CD-D-DA), providing eight-step sequence. bipolar outputs capable sinking withstanding state (sustaining voltages Ground-clamp flyback diodes provide protection against inductive transients. Thermal protection circuitry disables outputs when chip temperature excessive. Both devices rated operation over temperature range -20°C +85°C. UCN5804B supplied 16-pin dual in-line plastic batwing package with copper lead frame heat-sinkable tabs improved power dissipation capabilities; UCN5804LB supplied 16-lead plastic SOIC batwing package with copper lead frame heat-sinkable tabs.

APPLICATIONS INFORMATION
Internal power-on reset (POR) circuitry resets OUTPUTA (and OUTPUTD two-phase drive format) state with initial application logic supply voltage. After reset, circuit then steps according tables. outputs will advance sequence position high-to-low transition STEP INPUT pulse. Logic levels HALF-STEP ONE-PHASE inputs will determine drive format (one-phase, two-phase, half-step). DIRECTION determines rotation sequence outputs. Note that STEP INPUT must state when changing state ONE-PHASE, HALF-STEP, DIRECTION prevent erroneous stepping. outputs disabled (off) when OUTPUT ENABLE logic high. function required, OUTPUT ENABLE should tied low. that condition, outputs depend only state step logic. During normal commutation unipolar stepper motor, mutual coupling between motor windings force outputs UCN5804B below ground. This condition will cause forward biasing collector-to-substrate junction source current from output. many applications, this substrate current high enough adversely affect logic circuitry cause misstepping. External series diodes (Schottky recommended increased efficiency low-voltage operation) will prevent substrate current from being sourced through outputs. Alternatively, external ground clamp diodes will provide preferred current path from ground when outputs pulled below ground. Internal thermal protection circuitry disables outputs when junction temperature reaches approximately 165°C. outputs enabled again when junction cools down approximately 145°C.
