Depending on performance requirements, the designer can select a clock rate of 12 clocks per machine cycle or, with X2, a rate of 6 clocks per machine cycle. The result is twice the throughput at the same clock frequency. Another way to benefit from this feature is to keep the same performance by reducing the clock frequency by half, thus dramatically reducing the EMI. Each P89(L)V51Rx2 microcontroller has up to 64 KB of onchip Flash code memory. The memory supports parallel programming and serial In-System Programming (ISP). Parallel programming offer gang-programming at high speed, for lower programming costs and faster time-to-market. ISP allows a device to be reprogrammed under software control once it's in the end product, enabling in-field updates to application firmware. Each microcontroller also supports In-Application Programming (IAP), so the Flash program memory can be reconfigured while the application is running. Applications 4 Battery-powered devices Several on-chip features combine to reduce chip count, save 4 Printer panels 4 Industrial control board space, and lower overall cost. Each microcontroller includes an SPI interface and an enhanced UART. There are three 16-bit counter/timers, each configurable to toggle a port output on timer overflow or to become a PWM output. The on-chip Watchdog timer has a separate on-chip oscillator (nominal 400 kHz), requires no external components, and is selectable from eight values. Up to 64 KB Code Flash To save power, there are low-power modes, including a power-down mode with external interrupt wake-up and an idle mode. To reduce power consumption further, system supervisory functions include Power-on reset (POR) and brownout detection (BOD), which enables a graceful system shutdown in the event of a power failure.
